Maybe the first is a clematis? Has it had any flowers?

The second looks like common mallow.

There are loads of plant id apps for future use op, mostly free

GlamGiraffe · 29/05/2020 21:39

Second is definitely a mallow.

I think the climber is a not very happy-looking specimen of trachelospermum jasminoides. The pink flower is mallow.

Thanks for all your replies!

There is no sign of buds on the climber. The leaves are very thick, almost leathery (which makes me think it can't be clematis - or are there species like that which I don't know about?). Does the description of the leaves fit with Trachelospermum jasminoides?

As soon as the flowers appeared on the other plant (a couple of weeks ago?) I thought they looked very like mallow but the stalks of the plant are really thick (almost like rhubarb) - you can see in the photo that the stalk is almost as thick as the hosepipe. It's low growing and spreading (very fast growing), not upright and not at all 'dainty'. Does that all still fit with mallow?

Yes, the first plant looks ((squints)) exactly like the trachelospermum jasminoides growing in my garden, especially the smooth woody stem and the red tinge to some of the leaves. There is a clematis (armandii, I think) which has similar shaped leaves, but I think they would be less leathery and that doesn't look like a clematis stem to me, but I've never grown clematis armandii so don't know it so well.
