How tall are your sweet peas?

This year I used bamboo canes to create a tower and grew sweet peas from seed. I had visions of towers covered in sweet peas but they are only about a third high and have already started flowering. Are they likely to grow to 6ft from 2 ft or is it just going to look about rubbish?

These are mine, I sowed them from last year's pods in January. They grew pretty quickly in my kitchen window as it gets quite warm. I planted them in the garden around mid march which I know is a bit early but they were getting too tall for my kitchen window lol. I can't wait till they flower so I can put them round the house. Last year they smelt glorious. Flowers

I just realized I didn't even answer your question. It's probably too early to tell how tall they will get yet. Just make sure they get enough water and are planted in a spot that gets some sun but shade too. Smile

Thanks. They have grown a fair bit since I planted them out at the start of May but they would need to grow double again to create what I envisioned. Oh well. You live and learn.

Do you know which varieties you planted? There are different types of sweet pea which grow to different heights. There are dwarf varieties sold for patio pots that only grow to around 45cm, plus medium varieties that reach around 1m in addition to the traditional full height types.

It's a mix of different types but all say 6ft. I ma havemssed themup by being over eager and doing seeds a bit early so they got leggy and were in the pots a bit too long until frost passed.

They will carry on growing in height.
These are a photo of mine taken last July, they're about thigh height there, and I know that when I dismantled the pyramid in the autumn, it was absolutely smothered in stems.
Keep picking some flowers to ensure that they continue to flower.
I love sweet peas.

Yours look healthy and fine, my current ones are about 50cm tall and not flowering yet, but I know they will in the next month or so.

Mine are only about 30 cms at the moment, but they’re growing quickly. Last year they were over 5ft so I expect the same this year. If you feed them, pick the flowers and remove seed pods they should have a long flowering season.

About 4 inches. They are a bit pathetic

WellTidy · 28/05/2020 12:43

About four feet, I’d say. They’re everlasting sweet peas, they’re still in the ground from last year. No flowers as yet but lots of growth. I picked every few days for about two months last summer, they were lovely. Only thing is that they have no fragrance.

Ours are up to 60cm. First attempt for us so think we've put too many in the pot. Used some sticks from a hazel tree as supports.

Ok that's good as it sounds like they are in line with others. We bought ready grown ones in a container last year. I love picking them and the smell. Really looking forward to them this year but suppose I am a bit nervous as tried growing a lot of different things from seed this year and have definitely had varying success. Verbena and broccoli were an utter failure. Sunflowers, dahlia, sweet pea and tomatoes started well.

Just a quick update, I had no need to worry. They are huge now. To the top of the bamboo and still going.
