Anything we can still grow from seed in June?

The kids planted a load of herbs/chillies earlier in the year which they've really enjoyed watch grow.
We'd like to add something else to the collection. What would make sense to plant in the coming weeks? Ideally something edible Smile

Going to put some french beans in later. Also Swiss chard and carrots.

Knittedfairies · 27/05/2020 12:04

Lettuce, radish, beetroot, runner beans.

TooDamnSarky · 27/05/2020 12:26

thanks all.
unfortunately I'm not sure the boys will be jumping with enthusiasm for any of these.

Radishes and salad leaves are fun because they grow quickly. If you can get late season seed potatoes you can still plant them but they need a lot of room.

might be able to persuade DS1 to grow salad leaves. the quick growing time is appealing.

Sweet corn is to be planted late May so going into June will be fine. They are fantastic to grown and taste brilliant freshly picked & cooked.

Sow peas in a pot so they can be picked and eaten straight away in the garden. Ours never make it into the kitchen, quite quick to grow too.

Runner beans grow very quickly to begin with, and it's exciting to watch them reach the top of their canes. You can then forget about the for a few weeks.

You could even try the old thing of starting one or two off in a jamjar with a cylinder of blotting paper in - you tuck a bean half way up between jar and blotting paper, and can see both roots and shoot develop.

Herbs or salads on a sunny windowsill.
Radishes.

bluefoxmug · 28/05/2020 10:17

sunflowers
the seeds are edible and you can get cool varieties.
there is something special about tracking their growth next to a child.
one year we had giant ones that grew to almost 3 meters!

Thanks all. Lots of food for thought.

I did some late cherry tomatoes last year and managed a crop before the frost.

bluefoxmug · 28/05/2020 10:40

or have a look at the shelf if doom in the garden centre. you can sometimes get a bargain that really only needs a good soak.

LBOCS2 · 28/05/2020 13:17

Seconding the Sunflower suggestion - we started ours on a sunny windowsill on May 3rd and they're over a foot tall already. Great for kids as it's much quicker gratification!

TooDamnSarky · 28/05/2020 19:22

Thanks all. Really appreciate the help

Oh yes sunflowers. I found a packet of seeds and put them in a container outside just a few days ago and they are'already peeking out...

The ones that I started back in Feb Mar indoors and planted out have mostly been eaten by slugs or damaged some other way. But there are six still standing..and some getting towards waist high.

Cress on the windowsill is great. I saw little cress kits in lidl but just got some cress seeds and did it in a pot. Ate some today with my egg mayo. That is v quick and fun for kids.

Remember when we were kids it was always mustard and cress? Going to look for more cress and mustard seeds when I make it to town next week.

TooDamnSarky...how are your chilli plants?

Do you have them indoors or out?

Have way too many here mostly out in containers

CatBatCat · 28/05/2020 20:09

Squashes or pumpkins for Halloween.

peajotter · 28/05/2020 20:12

Depends where you are in the country. Too far north and you’ll be too late for most things (like me).

Peas are a great one for kids and not too late. Delicious raw from the pods and grow quickly. Watch out for pigeons though.

bluefoxmug · 28/05/2020 20:19

peas are also great as shoots on the window sill.

TooDamnSarky · 28/05/2020 21:02

@Destroyedpeople we have loads of chilli plants. At least 15 from 5 different varieties.
All still on the conservatory windowsill in varying sized pots.
But disappointed in how slowly they are growing - I'm not very patient.
Maybe they need fertiliser?
Am a bit worried that ds1 may be over watering in his enthusiasm - what would the signs be that would suggest that he is?

I don't know to be honest it's my first year of gardening. I also have loads of chilli plants which are now in pots outside . They are definitely slow.

Itwas my understanding that seedlings need plenty of water but you can leave older plants a bit thirsty as that makes the chillies hotter.

There is some really useful stuff online with little diagrams of how they should look and a life cycle. ..

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 21:10

I think you can use miracle gro or tomato plant food but not quite sure when in their cycle.

Mine have had miracle gro once or twice
