Turf

Hoping that someone who knows better will be able to advise.

Part of my garden is covered with stones where the previous owner had plant pots, I think. I'm hoping to replace the stones with turf so my son has a larger grassy area to play on. Does anyone know if I can just get turf put in, in place of the stones, or if I'll need to replace the current grass as well?

I hope this makes sense!

I’m not an expert but I have seeded and turfed gardens before, and about to again. We are planning to dig it all over and start again with fresh seed or turf, probably next year.

I think if you just turf/seed the new bit you’ll end up with two different types of grass that will be obvious from their colour and growth rate. So you’ll always have a “line” as such. There are loads of different grass seeds and mixes. Is that something you could live with?

If you wanted to returf or seed it all you could turn the old stuff over but it’s a big job.

Otherwise I’d think about what sort of play your child does now, and is likely to do in the future, and consider alternatives. For example if it’s football then how about wood chip? My kids love racing around on wheels and we live in a wet place so leaving some paving is ideal for us. In my last place I replaced part of the patio with a giant sandpit made from sleepers. It was planned to be a raised veggie bed when the kids got older. Paving can also be good for basketball and ball games.
