Compost, Manure, topsoil, mulch ? HELP!

Hi all, am trying to prepare flower beds and am happy for a fairly long term solution in that I am not too bothered about planting anything straightaway. I have decided to place cardboard over the two borders and then cover with compost, mulch etc.

I have measured how much I need but am totally confused by the choice.

Can anyone advise what I need, is it just compost or just manure or do I need everything ?

Plus the soil will be bare for a while so any ideas how I stop cats from going on them?

Any advice gratefully received Smile

Mulch is generally used to suppress weeds and keep moisture in already planted beds, so you don't need that yet.

What is your soil like? Clay? (clumps together and can get waterlogged) Sandy? (well drained and can get very dry very quickly). Having an idea can help you decide what to plant and how much enrichment and structure it needs.
Start making your own compost from kitchen and garden waste. There are a few methods - Google to find a way that works for you. Dig it in before planting.

Well-rotted manure is useful if your soil is poor or doesn't retain moisture. Often local stables have bags for sale, but make sure it is well rotted with no visible straw.

I assume the cardboard is for weed suppression? Not sure why you would put that underneath any additions to the soil - it needs to go over the whole lot, and will eventually rot down as well. That will also help stop cats digging.

Hi Squashy, thanks for the info. It is definitely clay. Will look into making my own compost.

So if I'm not planting for a while I am best adding to the soil before putting cardboard on top and leave until it's rotted down ? I didn't realise that but I suppose it's logical!

The logic behind putting the cardboard under the mulch is that ut will weigh it down so it doesn't blow away, the cardboard will rot, and the mulch won't have any seeds in, and the compost will only have annuals, not persistent perennials.
