Shady border

We have a NW facing garden which has been a labour of love since we moved in four years ago. I don't have a great deal of base knowledge (never had my own garden before) so learning as I go!!

It was full of bamboo and prickly shrubs and we've created a patio, play area and a flower border down the right hand side (which gets a reasonable amount of sun in the morning).

My problem is the left hand border (as you look up the garden) gets 0 sunlight it is fully shady. Is there ANYTHING That will grow here? There's two camelia (I think) which have been there since we moved in so don't want a whole border of the same plant if possible.

I think I can post pictures if needed.

I would love your green fingers to guide me!!

Hi there! I don't know much but in my north facing shady border these are working,
-roses mme alfred carriere, James Galway and Clare Austin growing up the fence,
also climbing hydrangea works well in shade.
I've got Christmas/Lenten roses/ ferns/ acanthus mollis rue ledan/ Pulmonata sissinghurst white/anemone honorine jobert
Depends on your soil too. How dry it is etc I just try things and move them around if they don't work.
All the best Thanks

Our garden is NW too, I love it, it's quite wide & we get plenty of sun.
The left hand border is shady. My favourite thriving plant on that side is Tamarix , a small tree with big pink fronds at this time of year. Ours is old and hangs over the lawn and we use it for shade in the height of summer.

Sorry, tamarisk.

Have a look here for ideas.

That's a beautiful looking tree @Chewbecca
I think those camellias sound good too @hicketypickety I just put a little one in my shady area and it is thriving.
Have a little wander round your area too and see what grows well locally.

Thank you everyone! Am definitely going to take a wander round and see what others have and look at the link. I like the sound of a climbing hydrangea too Smile

I've just planted a skimmia in a shady corner. Yet to see if it survives but I've read they like shade!

Tree Ferns but need wrapping in winter ,many types of fern really, I've got a rockery in deep shade full of differing varieties.Vibunum, sarrocca, some taller perennial Geraniums too.

Winter jasmine - yellow flowers from autumn through winter and into spring (mine still has a flower on it, and I think it started in late August.

Hosts are good for shade and other woodland plants

SecondaryBurnzzz · 24/05/2020 13:17

I have a shady border too so have looked into this a lot!
I have ordered - elephant ears - Bergenia, saracocca (smells divine) and a selection of ferns and an epimedium, but my 'border' is really narrow. I think that the rugosa roses will grow in shade too.
Crocus are good if you used their plant finder filters, and they also do ready made border selections. Another here. You can pinch their ideas!

Rhododendrons like shade, flower beautifully and are evergreen. How's your soil? You can check its PH levels by doing the soil and vinegar test. This will help you decide what will grow well in your soil.

I have:

Ferns
Fatsia
Aquilegia
Foxgloves
Honeysuckle (shade tolerant variety)
Climbing hydrangea
Welsh poppies
Hellebores
Japanese yew
Japanese anemones
