Hi, looking for some advice on how to get some privacy in my garden. I am renting so cannot put up a larger fence etc but I was thinking maybe some tall plants?

I am a very novice gardener so any ideas would be appreciated!

I can see there are a few pots there but what is that border in front on the fence? Is it stone chippings & does it have weed matting under it? If so then anything you plant will have to be in troughs/pots.

Climbers on a trellis in front of the fence (or on top if your landlord would give permission). You can train them in any direction. Clematis Montana is the fastest but not evergreen so won’t give winter cover.

If you can’t put up a trellis, you could put some long canes in the ground and tie string between them for the plants to climb up. You might need to attach them to the fence with string and small tacks if you have high winds though.

Are you allowed to plant in the border, in the ground rather than pots?

If so, what about a line of tree peony and verbena bonariensis?
Tree peony grows to about 5, sometimes 6 foot and verbena 6 foot.
You could put them in pots but they’d have to be quite big ones.

Or, if that’s not tall enough, tree peony ‘ludlowii’ reaches 9 foot tall?

That's perfect thanks! I love the tree peony.

I am allowed to plant along the boarder. It is a soil with stones on top, with no weed matting.

Think about where you really need your privacy - is it just from your sitting out space or along the whole length? Do you want to feel private or do you want to make it impossible to see in? Something near to you will block out more than something further away, So a single tall bush near where you sit out might be as effective as 3 or 4 bushes further away. You don't necessarily need a complete screen to make you feel private, but you need something much denser to stop someone peering through gaps in the vegetation.
