What are your thoughts? I’ve only just noticed it, which makes me think that it’s a perennial. It’s about 30 cm in height. Currently in a mostly shade and part sun spot.

The leaves look like Philadelphus, and the flowers do too but I've not seen them clumped together like that - but there's more than one variety so that's my best guess. Is it fragrant? Philadelphus is.

WellTidy · 23/05/2020 16:06

No scent. I thought there was, and then realised that what I thought was the scent of this plant was actually the lilac next to it.

All ideas welcome!

Looks like Philadelphus, I don’t know if all varieties have a strong scent.

WellTidy · 23/05/2020 17:43

I have no memory of buying or planting it! But a Philadelphia is a very welcome addition to my garden! Is it in the right place, in terms of size of gap and aspect, do you think? It is between two lilacs, so very sheltered but in shade for nearly all of the day.

You need the PictureThis app. It is wonderful for identifying plants and tees.

Do you have that app, Apollo? I’ve heard that some of the plant identifier apps can be spectacularly bad. I am not much better myself, mind you !

@WellTidy Yes I have it and use it a lot.

WellTidy · 23/05/2020 22:42

Thanks - I will download.

I’ve heard that some of the plant identifier apps can be spectacularly bad. It's not so much that they're spectacularly bad, it's that when they get it wrong they can get it really wrong, not even a near miss. And they do it with such confidence, so you don't even know when you need a second opinion.

yamadori · 24/05/2020 12:46

I think it's a deutzia.

MsPepperPotts · 24/05/2020 12:56

It looks like a type of Clematis Montana - early flowering variety?

WellTidy · 24/05/2020 20:02

I have a deutzia so I took a look. The leaf is identical and the size is about the same. The flowers are a little different but that could be due to a different variety.

It definitely isn’t a clematis Montana as it doesn’t seem to be a climber and all my other montanas stooped flowering before this plant even started.
