Dianthus scent first candy floss

Anyone grow this?

I bought 5 plugs from the breeder (Whetman pinks), obviously no flowers on them yet and an established dianthus candy floss plant from a reputable nursery.

The established plant arrived today, in flower, with virtually no scent!!!

What is the likelihood I have been sent the wrong one?!
It’s got pale pink flowers and the label says it is indeed candy floss.

I am so so disappointed.
I absolutely love strongly scented flowers.
I used to grow ‘Doris’ and have ’Cranmere pool’ in the garden currently which both have a far stronger scent than this plant!

This plant is meant to be specifically bred for fragrance Confused

Have you checked that you can still smell everything else?

frostedviolets · 22/05/2020 12:34

Yeah.
I am a bit bunged up at the moment as I have hay fever but I can still smell my roses and I had a good ol sniff of my cranmere pool dianthus to compare and can still smell them too.

These ‘scent first’ Hmm candy floss dianthus, nope.
There’s the faintest imaginable scent if you literally push your nose into the flower but it’s so so weak.

The plug plants of the same variety haven’t bloomed yet so can’t compare them but if they turn out the same as this big plant, I am going to be very disappointed.

Did the "reputable nursery" describe it as fragant? If so, it would be worth a complaint. If not, still complain, but they'll come back with a "sorry you were disappointed but we supplied as described"

Yes!!
I know they won’t refund me or anything, it looks lovely in my garden I’m just really disappointed and pissed off that it’s not fragrant as described as I would never have bought it if I knew it wouldn't be fragranced.
😡
Waiting game now to see if the plugs from the breeder have a good strong scent when they flower.

If they do then I have been very clearly sent the wrong flower which is really annoying.
If not I will definately complain.

Try again this evening and the scent might be stronger. Plants release fragrance at different levels depending on the time of day and what they are trying to attract to pollinate them. Some dianthus are pollinated by butterflies, others by nocturnal moths.
