Can you help identify this shrub?

Can anyone tell me what this lovely purple flowering shrub is called please? I’ve seen quite a few of them whilst walking and it would be perfect for a spot in my garden.

I’ve narrowed it down to Ceanothus, but does anyone know which variety this is likely to be?

Thanks

There are loads of varieties that look similar. Google image it and discount any that are the dwarf variety. It looks an evergreen type.

How big is it?

SerenaVanDerWoodsen · 16/05/2020 16:32

It’s about 2m I would say. I’ve tried to google but still not sure. Thanks

It's Ceanothus - there are many different forms, but it will give you a start of what to look for. (Also known as Californian lilac)

It looks like a ceanothus - they come in a range of blue/purple shades. We used to have an amazing climbing one up the side of our house that we had to remove when we had an extension done - was gutted!

Knittedfairies · 16/05/2020 17:34

It looks like Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens to me.

FerneGreene · 16/05/2020 17:46

@Knittedfairies I have one and agree the flowers look the same colour.

Mine is grafted as a standard though.. no idea if they can get to 2m tall otherwise 🤔

frostedviolets · 16/05/2020 18:15

I have a repens too and yes the picture does look identical to mine but it’s definately not 2m tall.

I am fairly sure that repens is a dwarf variety and won’t grow that tall, I suspect it’s a different variety.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I’m wondering now if it might be puget blue? The internet says it grows quite tall and it looks similar.
Anyway I suppose it doesn’t matter too much if they are all very similar. Thank you all for your ideas, it is helpful in choosing one that will fill the space I have Smile

@SerenaVanDerWoodsen just fyi - the colours can vary quite a bit and it's difficult to judge from photos on the internet. I was really hoping to get a deep blue one like some that I've seen around here so was actually a bit disappointed with the flowers on my repens (it's still a good shrub overall). If the flower colour is important to you I think it's worth asking the owner what it is or seeing them in flower before you buy.

Great, thanks for the tip @FerneGreene.
Thanks all, very helpful as ever Flowers

Yes, possibly 'Puget Blue'. I had it in the garden years ago, in a raised bed, and it eventually reached about 6 or 7 feet. It's probably the best blue, but they can be somewhat short-lived. Mine eventually died after about 15 years.
