Grass that doesn't require mowing

Apart from laying artifical grass, is there such thing as a variety of grass that won't require very regular mowing?

I've cleared an area in my garden that was previously full of weed, it's around 4m x 2m and I thought it would be nice to have an area of grass in our garden since the rest is paved.

I don't want to have to buy a lawmower especially for a small patch so if there's a variety of grass that grows slowly then I'd prefer that, since it'll be cheaper to pay a gardener with their own tools to come round every couple of months to mow it/weed etc.

I've searched online and there are grass alternatives that don't require mowing but I do like the look and feel of grass.

Annoyingly, I'm not answering your question, but in terms of mowing, we have a very small lawn, and use a manual mower that cost about £40. It's fab, no hassle with extension cables through the window etc.

There are low mow grass mixes you can get, yes. Being different varieties I don't know what they feel like.

You could use creeping thyme or chamomile instead of grass to make a lawn

Chillipeanuts · 14/05/2020 21:02

Was going to suggest chamomile lawn, Feawen beat me to it.
Wildflower meadow? Robotic mower? Is there such a thing?

paininthepoinsettia · 14/05/2020 21:07

I tried the chamomile one year, it definitely needed mowing the summer! In fact it looked really untidy most of the year, not at all like the lawns I saw on pinterest.

I find that regular mowing is the best way to keep the weeds down. Is a small mower definitely not an option? Otherwise I expect you will have weeds again in 2-3 months...

Purplewithred · 14/05/2020 22:01

Is it really worth having a lawn that small? Even low-mow grass needs mowing regularly to look good, and getting someone in to mow a bit that small is going to be ridiculously expensive.

Bluntness100 · 14/05/2020 22:05

A clover lawn would do it, it requires little to no mowing, but I’m also not sure for that size I’d lawn it to be honest.

wonderrotunda · 14/05/2020 22:13

Even clover needs an occasional mow! Ground cover plants?

MrsIronfoundersson · 14/05/2020 22:32

What do you want to use it for? Could it be a wildflower meadows instead?

MyMonkeyIsATwat · 14/05/2020 22:37

My mum has a camomile lawn, it's beautiful and soft and she never mows it.

Buffalo grass doesn't need mowing, but I have a feeling it won't grow in this climate simply because I haven't seen it.

Yes the buffalo grass is also not nice to walk on, very sharp

WitchDancer · 17/05/2020 13:27

You need a couple of guinea pigs - they eat grass therefore removing the need to mow 😁

yamadori · 17/05/2020 13:50

Yes. It's called concrete.
