How long do clematis take to grow?

SandyDays · 13/05/2020 21:13

I bought these clematis plants online and didn't realise how small they would be. I wish I had vouch some more established ones, I was looking at 2year old plants which seemed around 2/3 foot.

Does anybody know how long these will take to grow and flower?

What type are they? If they are a clematis Montana or Armondii then they are pretty rampant but if not then a bit slower.

olympicsrock · 13/05/2020 23:09

Don’t worry . In this weather they will grow pretty quickly. My Montana is rampant!

SandyDays · 14/05/2020 08:01

Thank you, yes one is a Montana, the others are Aromatica, Napaulensis and Florida Taiga.
They just look so small!

They are pretty small, they will grow perhaps a foot or more, but I don’t think you’ll get any flowers this year, sorry.
Make sure you water and feed them. Clematis like their heads in the sun and feet in the shade, so put a few stones or half a terracotta plant pot at the base of the plants.

Beebumble2 · 14/05/2020 09:16

Oops, sorry I see you’ve already put stones down.

SandyDays · 14/05/2020 09:24

Thanks Bee, oh that's disappointing but what I thought too.
Yes I read about them liking their roots in the shade so covered with some stones.

new growth is very susceptible to slugs, so keep a look out.

SandyDays · 14/05/2020 10:18

Two are in raised beds so that might offer some protection, I'll keep an eye on them all though.

Eek, they do look really small @SandyDays

Can I ask where you got them from, just so that I know to avoid that company? 🙈

As others have said, they should be ok if you keep an eye on them. They grow really fast, but probably won’t flower this year.

Beebumble2 · 14/05/2020 16:03

Napaulensis is a winter flowering clematis, so it might put on enough growth to flower next winter. Don’t prune.
Aromatica is a late summer Autumn flowering clematis, you might be lucky to get a flower or two.
Florida Taiga is a spectacular clematis which has large blooms all summer. My Taiga took a couple of years to really get going.
As others have said the Montana will romp away, but as they are flowering now you will probably have to wait till next spring for flowers.

bluefoxmug · 14/05/2020 16:06

they will grow fast once they get going.
as pp said, good feed and water regularly.

SandyDays · 14/05/2020 16:15

@Crazzzycat they are from Thompson-Morgan, ordered online and they arrived by post - defo wouldn't recommend!

I had been researching and was going to buy from Taylors as they state that all their plants are at least 2 years old, then I got distracted saw these and ordered without checking their age.

Big regret Sad

Thanks for all the advice, I will keep them well fed and watered and see what happens.

May have to order a couple more slightly larger ones though...

We got a taiga online last year too & it is similarly, disappointingly, tiny. Yours actually looks healthier. Fingers crossed they pick up.

sarahc336 · 17/05/2020 14:34

Mmm I've bought from Thompson and Morgan and too was delivered literally a stalk for a phlox that at full maturity will be about 50cm tall Confused it's going to take about 2 years to get there, but annoyed really, I wouldn't recommend them. What websites do actually sell mature plants ready to actually plant out? Xx

Beebumble2 · 17/05/2020 18:02

Crocus supply Waitrose with their plants and apparently very good.
It’s so difficult atm, I love to see the plants before buying. The garden centres have one way systems so it’s difficult to browse and compare plants.

sarahc336 · 17/05/2020 18:06

Oh so if you go into a garden centre if you change tour mind you can't go back to something you've already passed? Confused x

Beebumble2 · 17/05/2020 18:12

Not at the one I visited last week. Had to walk around loads of things I didn’t want.

Clutterbugsmum · 17/05/2020 18:19

I've ordered from AshridgeTrees I was surprised that the plants were so large.

Chewbecca · 17/05/2020 19:31

Here's my Taiga - from JParkers.

No, this is its first year here, was ‘dormant’ when it arrived.
