Sleepers- any old plastic lining?

We've got some sleepers that we are going to use down the side of our house to make some beds. I've been reading about how to do it and see that some people recommend lining them to stop weeds and to protect the wood. Is there a certain type of lining you're supposed to use? Not sure what we will plant in there yet but it wont be any kind of fruit or veg if that makes a difference? thanks for any advice

You need to be careful with sleepers, as many of them have been treated with heavy duty chemicals to stop them rotting. You don’t want toxic preservatives leaching into the soil you use for growing anything you eat, for instance.

If the sleepers are old and have been coated with creosote or preservative oils / chemicals, then it's a good idea to use a liner to separate the soil from the wood. The stuff used on gravel driveways to prevent weeds coming through should be fine - it's normally Terram sheeting. Equally the plastic sheeting stuff used to line ponds will be fine.

I have some heavy duty black plastic sheeting inside mine! Just to protect the sleepers & hold some water.
They aren't old sleepers so aren't coated in anything!

I've used old compost bags cut open the stapled to the sleepers
