So sad about my rose not flowering - help

I feel very stupid. I have a climbing rose at the end of the garden, think it was wedding day. It's been in three years and flowered quite nicely last year. This year it's grown well and spread out but there isn't a single bud Sad

I feel v cross with myself as I should have known it was struggling. I've panic bought feed from amazon, should I take a few shoots off as well to try and give it a chance of flowering? It looks healthy just no buds. It's not in the sunniest location (curse the neighbours tree) but it gets a decent few hours. The soil is a bit crap but it managed last year.....

Don’t panic, there is still plenty of time. I think Wedding Day is a white once flowering rambler if I’m thinking of the right one?

What time of year did it flower last year? Did you prune it and if so when?

helpfulperson · 11/05/2020 20:06

Whereabouts are you? None of my Rose's have flowered yet in the south of Scotland.

Viviennemary · 11/05/2020 20:07

You could try some plant fertiliser for roses. And it's early yet in the season.

Angel2702 · 11/05/2020 20:11

I have a whole bed of Roses and some are just opening up now whilst others aren’t in bud yet.

Thank you! It was in flower in June. I guess it is early, spent so long looking at the garden to distract me from lockdown and work!

North of England for location

And no I don't remember pruning much if at all, I didn't think it needed it as still spreading out but I think it's got worn out

Plenty of time yet then. Give her a feed and mulch and don’t look at her for a few weeks. The buds will come!
Some of mine have buds but they’re repeat flowerers. Lots don’t yet though. None of my ramblers have buds yet but I’m confident they’ll come.

I think it’s this lockdown making us all impatient! 😂

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 11/05/2020 22:25

Ok will do. Yes I've got a Dixieland Linda growing against a fence which is coming out nicely but it's a repeat flowerer.

Roses are very resilient. Even old neglected roses struggle on. As others have said, just give it some feed and wait.
I give mine a top dress of rose food, from Wilkos, every spring. They do flower at different times.

Lucked · 12/05/2020 08:03

I am in Scotland and none of my roses are flowering yet.

Vodkacranberryplease · 14/05/2020 23:07

Mine is flowering for the first year because I've watered it three times as much as I have in the past. Then I didn't water it for several days and some flowers are dying. Sounds obvious but watering them loads makes a huge difference!
Also check for aphids. The little fuckers got my honeysuckle last year and they like the buds before they flower. This year I'm spraying the fuck out of them with a (non harmful to pets and plants) spray.

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 20/05/2020 21:59

Fed it, watered it and now there are buds!!
Delighted.

What did you feed it?

Also, my rose bushes are covered in greenfly - would should I use to get rid of them! Pet friendly...

Purplewithred · 20/05/2020 22:53

Put on a pair of gloves and squish the greenfly. If they are being farmed by antS then find the ants nest and disturb it so they move out.

Tootletum · 20/05/2020 22:58

Apparently spraying very diluted washing up liquid creates a film the aphids can't stick to. We have gone for the full chemicals though.

Lovetoridemybicycle · 20/05/2020 23:00

Uncle Tom's rose tonic is amazing. Pricey but worth it. Most important are the dose before Winter and one in spring. Lots of water, not just a quick soak with a hose but an hour long small drip to get the water to the roots.
Might not make it for this year, but fingers crossed for next

Clemmieandareallybigbunfight · 20/05/2020 23:53

I fed it miracle gro rose and shrub as that was on amazon for next day delivery. I've got two bare root roses that went in this year that are starting to shoot too. It's so exciting
