Drying herbs and need a dry airy room. I don’t have an attic. What other room can I use?

Hi, Please can anybody help with this query? I’ve grown some basil and thyme and plan to dry the leaves, but according to drying instructions I need a dry airy room such as an attic.

I live in a new build so unfortunately I don’t have an attic.

What other room could be classed as dry and airy, or any other suggestions on drying please ?

Erm, how should we know if you have another dry, airy room in your house? Hmm.
I'm sure someone more helpful will be along soon.

@Fartlek, ok, daft question then....

Have you got an airing cupboard you could use? If you’re planning on doing a lot of this maybe experiment with a couple of leaves in a few different places and see what works best? Kitchen and bathroom are obviously off the list straight away!

Depending on how big a ‘thing’ this drying herbs may become you could dedicate a cupboard to this with a small dehumidifier in it. For however long it will take.
My ma used to dry bundles of herbs not delicate leaves though - more oregano/thyme/rosemary - tied with string from (airy and light) basement rafters. Hung by stalks. Took several months. Good luck op.

You can dry them in the oven on a low heat for a few hours.

@Sunbird24 thanks, yes I have an airing cupboard, but it’s not a big one.
I think I could move stuff round a bit to accommodate.

Or small food dehydrator ? Not sure they come small and pretty sure they don’t come cheap.
These could end up remarkably expensive but loved herbs ? Grin

Ah, didn’t know you @lizzie0712, I’ll try that, thanks.

Oh that’s funny - I didn’t think of the bloody oven - sounds sensible.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/05/2020 10:25

As pp said yoi can dry them in the oven, much quicker :)

AppleFruitloaf66 · 09/05/2020 10:29

Lots of great ideas thanks all xxx
@HeronLanyon yes they could end up remarkably expensive 😃

Some sauces require dried herbs, so I want to go down that route. A bit.

Plus I grow some purely to just smell them, beautiful aromas.

I’ve just discovered I can dry them in a microwave for up to three minutes !!
