Today we enquired about an allotment, we are going to choose a plot tomorrow I cannot believe how lucky we are!

We have various veg plants that were going in our small garden, however we cannot take any more decking up as we have nowhere to store it, the rotten part we have taken up has a patio under it perfect for a green house. So we asked for a plot.

So far I have courgettes, two varieties of squash, Brussels cauli, broccoli sweet corn. Various salad items in pots.

My question is how many of each do I need to fill a standard size plot and how do I start.

My parents had an allotment but I never took to much notice.

Courgettes and squashes like a bit of space , as does corn I think. I tend to look up spacing And remember corn likes to be planted in a block not a row (to pollinate better or something ).

Also remember if you grow too much you can always freeze and store stuff so I’m aiming for more rather than less and learning as I go as you can even grow squashes vertically !

I reckon 2 or 3 courgette plants will do for a small family but I’ve planted more and they are a nice thing to share too.

And remember corn likes to be planted in a block not a row (to pollinate better or something ). Corn is wind pollinated, so if you put it in a long row, most of the pollen will be blown off elsewhere.

Thank you. I have hardly been online since we got the plot.

We have planted squash, courgettes, pumpkins. A variety of beans, and corn. To get us going.

We are thoroughly enjoying time at the plot so far.
