Fence with two colours - diagram included

I am hoping for some opinions on our fence please.

We have a long narrow back garden. Would it look OK to paint the fence white by the patio, and dark brown further down the garden?

Green lines on diagram = white
Red lines on diagram = dark brown

Reasoning - would like the grassy bit of garden to be more natural and blend out to the surroundings, hence brown.

Really like the fresh look of a white fence/wall around a seating area. A bit more modern. Also would brighten up the side return and brighten the living room (which is to bottom right of diagram).

Seems like an obvious thing to do but I can’t find any pictures of this configuration online, and DH is having cold feet but I think he just thinks it’s ‘not the done thing’

The garden is a bit longer than the diagram suggests, and the patio bit is small, only 2 panels out from back of kitchen.

I would really appreciate your views!

It’s your garden and there’s no right or wrongs.
I was intrigued by your idea and looked on Pinterest at painted fences.
There are some great, possibly whacky ideas on there. Have a look.

Of course if you don’t like the white you can always repaint it.

yes, I think that would be fine. it is common to divide your garden up into different 'rooms' and this would be part of that - use the paint to delineate different spaces.

I'd plant lots of climbers like Clematis on the dark brown bits of fence too.

I think I'd probably plant something at the two joins, so you have a shrub or tallish perennial (more than half the height of the fence) with a brown fence one side and a white the other.

I'm planning on doing this except green instead of brown. I don't know how white will age but am willing to find out.

Great, thanks for all your lovely comments.

I am looking at Pinterest and yes there’s loads of nice ideas there. Most of the gardens coming up on my searches are either very big, or small courtyards. Ideally I would like to see one exactly like mine so I have confidence to copy it!

I have ordered a clematis to start with, and we are definitely looking to build up some more greenery around the ‘brown’ edges bit by bit.

Good idea to put a potted shrub at the two joins too.

Good luck Monster! Are you going for a brilliant white, I was thinking slightly antique/stoney white would be nice, but having said that, we have white upvc doors at the back, so it probably will need to be brilliant white.

I have a fence on top of a wall, both of which i'll be painting brilliant white because getting a specific colour in both masonry and fence paint will be hard.

As someone said earlier, if you mark the change with tall planting or shrubbery to soften the transition. I would probably fix some sturdy trellis fencing at right angles to the existing fence and grow climbers up it. You'd frame the view down the garden, add interest and mask the colour change.

Oh I love that idea of the trellises at 90 degrees! Would have to be thin ones as the garden is so narrow. Will look into it!
