I feel I should recognise this - the oval leaves - but I don't.

is it a cistus?

Beekeeper1 · 28/04/2020 17:09

If you mean the lower growing plant at the back, with reddish stems, it looks like an aquilegia. Should have flower spikes by now, but looks rather shaded which will be holding it back

Beekeeper1 · 28/04/2020 17:16

Apologies, i guess you mean the shrub in the foreground with grey foliage. Is the foliage fleshy? If so, it may be a variety of hebe, but I am not too confident on this!

Helianthemum?

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/04/2020 10:07

Leaves look like a hebe lead but I think purplewithred has a good idea with Cistus from the shapes of the buds at the ends of the branches.

JKScot4 · 29/04/2020 10:11

I think it’s a catchfly.

Footle · 29/04/2020 10:19

Thanks everyone! I think it is cistus and I loved it last year. Phew. So glad I asked you people instead of pulling it up. I think it's a red one, but as you can tell I'm a bit vague about it.
Yes, aquilegia all over the place too.

@Purplewithred , thank you for identifying my cistus. I cut it back and it is now flowering - just one flower so far. I like it very much and I'm so glad I didn't hoik it out.

Helianthemum rather than Cistus? Both "rock roses", Helianthemum are smaller with flowers in a range of bright colours - red, orange, yellow, pink, white. Cistus tend to be bushes, with flowers in white, pink, purples, and not, as far as I know, that bright orangey red of yours.

Thanks @MereDintofPandiculation. I had been told when I got it that it was Cistus but you're right about it being smaller and brighter than others I've just looked at. Helianthemum is in the Cistaceae family , it says here. Do you have any tips about keeping them happy ?

Yes its Helianthemum.
They like sun/dry soil, much like Cistus.

Footle · 11/05/2020 21:10

@trickyex , does that mean I shouldn't water it?

No need if its well established.
