Help - grass won't grow

babysnowman · 27/04/2020 13:56

We filled in some of the gaps in our lawn with topsoil and added grass seed.

Although it's been dry, we've been watering twice a day for almost two weeks now and there's no sign of any new grass.

Are we doing something wrong? Or do we just need to be patient?

Thanks in advance.

Unless all the seed has been eaten by birds, it won't be long before it germinates.

The seed is just sitting there on top of the soil, is that normal?

Was the grass seed fairly fresh?

Whenever DH reseeds a patch, he waters it well and then pegs some clear polythene over it. This acts as a 'mini greenhouse' to raise temperature, keep in the moisture and also keeps the birds off. Clear bags cut open would be fine, the odd hole won't matter.

Not really sure...there were lots of holes that the dog had dug. A local landscaper did it but as far as I can see he just poured 'topsoil' in the holes (which I think may actually just have been soil from a part of the garden he dug up as it is full of stones) and literally just sprinkled a box of grass seed over it.

You’re supposed to rake it in, not just sprinkle it on top...

Definately cover it. DH has some netting which stops birds but als has an incubation effect like plastic

Yeah it needs to be raked in and then firmed down with the back of the rake. Sometimes it does take a while to germinate though, so you do need to be patient.
