It's probably really basic but I've no clue

Thank you

Could you tell me what this plant is?

A rosebush

Unremarkable · 25/04/2020 22:43

Hi OP. Give us a clue! Your photo is a bit blurry. Are you in the UK? Is it berries? On a vine or shrub?

TowerRingInferno · 25/04/2020 22:46

Are those rose hips? Sorry, cant quite tell from the photo.

bedtimebrew · 25/04/2020 22:50

I did wonder if rosehip ... knowing nothing except having seen some on a vitamin package!

Am in England - sorry for the rubbish photo, I'll try another one in the morning

Are they dark and a bit shrivelled? If so it is possible that they are rosehips left over from last summer. Mine have long since been eaten by birds so I was surprised to see them.

Missingthesea · 25/04/2020 23:03

They look like the old rosehips left on our rosebush, as per TowerRingInferno.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/04/2020 23:21

It looks like some sort of rose to me too. One of my bushes keeps its hips into the next year if I've forgotten to prune it.

Does it have thorns?

bedtimebrew · 25/04/2020 23:35

I just googled rosehip and it does look like that (yes, mostly dried and shrivelled)

But wait .. am I understanding correctly .. is this then an actual
Rose bush? Like roses should be growing on it (they never have in the 3 years I've been here... clearly I've entirely neglected my garden until lockdown)

It must have had flowers to create the hip - I wouldn't have thought they could last 3 years.Confused

bedtimebrew · 25/04/2020 23:48

Really?! That's terrible if there were roses there and I didn't even notice Shock

Should I do something to look after it now I've started caring?

It looks a bit of a dark corner. Does the rose get sun much? Is it in with other shrubs and trees. If it's in trees the ground is possibly too dry for it to flourish , and all plants do better with good light.

bedtimebrew · 26/04/2020 10:06

Thank you, it's right next to a tree. It does get some sun but the ground is probably quite dry so I'll try watering it more often

Some of the roses that produce hips have quite short lived flowers that don’t really stand out and are easily ruined by rain.

The hips look right for Rosa canina but the leaves don’t (if those are the leaves in the picture - I couldn’t quite tell).

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/04/2020 12:50

Those are last year's hips, so it had at least three flowers last year. It's possible that it's a single flowered rose, not one with double flowers and lots of petals, so may have seen it but not really twigged it was rose flowers.

Thank you, I'm finding the replies really interesting and I'm really impressed by your knowledge

It might be it's the root stock taken over from a grafted bush?
