Compost substitute ?

My dh has bought a lot of seeds and getting compost is very difficult. We have a full garden waste bin that hasn't been emptied for about 2 years. Any suggestions as to substitutes for compost ? Could we use just normal soil ? Would mixing it with what is extremely well rotted garden waste an idea ? Grasping at straws really any help appreciated.

Your well-rotted garden waste sounds like compost to me - that’s how I make compost. That mixed with soil would work fine I’m sure.

Only reason I wouldn’t use it is if you put any nasty perennial weeds in there.

If you sieve the soil and compost to get rid of any stones or big twiggy bits, that would help get your seeds off to a good start.

Thank you. Dh is quite keen to tip out the brown bin and dd would love to sieve the soil.

Garden compost on its own will mostly be fine but can be a bit nutrient rich for seedlings. I usually mix equal parts of compost, leaf mold and sieved topsoil. Sometimes add some fine grit for drainage (or even finely smashed egg shells)
