URGENT: baby ate plants
We were in the garden earlier and my 9 month old and I were looking at the flowers. My daughter quickly put this in her mouth as soon as I saw her do it I took it out. My husband has just told me they are bleeding hearts and are posinous. I feel so guilty, should I take my daughter to A&E. I am so worried. Please no judgemental comments :(

No idea what that plant is but if you know it to be poisonous and your baby ate it yep you need to get medical attention ASAP.

greathat · 23/04/2020 14:43

Dicentra are toxic. Call 111 first if you can get through

Russell19 · 23/04/2020 14:43

I am unsure about the plant but don't beat yourself up. These things happen.

dementedpixie · 23/04/2020 14:43

Did she actually swallow any or was it just in her mouth for a few seconds?

greathat · 23/04/2020 14:43

You might get fast tracked if needed

Itsabitmessy · 23/04/2020 14:44

Yes absolutely. Better safe than sorry. Take a stem of the plant with you so the doctors can be sure what it is and what needs to be done. Good luck

Michelleoftheresistance · 23/04/2020 14:44

They are poisonous; a flower in and out of the mouth unchewed and unswallowed isn't likely to be terrible so don't panic, but yes you need to talk to a medic immediately.

greathat · 23/04/2020 14:45

I think you'd need to eat a lot but seek medical attention

dementedpixie · 23/04/2020 14:48

Googling suggests you'd need to eat a fair bit to get poisoned so if she didnt swallow any she should be ok.

woodencoffeetable · 23/04/2020 14:49

sorry I can't find specific information, but a quick google gave a few mostly american sites that says it's poisonous.

the latin name of the plant is: Lamprocapnos spectabilis

orangina01 · 23/04/2020 14:50

Yes seek medical help. If she only ate a small amount her reaction may be mild but.you definitely need to get her seen straightaway or call 111 immediately

Madratlady · 23/04/2020 14:51

Call 111, their clinicians have access to toxbase which is a database of poisons and they can advise

Baconisgoodformeee · 23/04/2020 14:52

Stay calm and Call 111! They will advices you on what to do.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 23/04/2020 14:54

Did she eat it or just put it in her mouth?
Did she chew it enough to release “juice” from it?
If no, then just phone your doctors/ NHS direct. If yes, A&E.

Info online

Like a surprisingly large number of plants, bleeding heart is toxic if it is eaten in large enough quantities. This is rare with people, but dogs are frequently poisoned by the plant. The bleeding heart contains isoquinoline alkaloids, which can cause seizures and damage to the liver at high enough doses. For small dogs, even a fairly small amount can cause liver damage. Touching the plant can also cause mild skin rashes. Fatalities are rare in people, though more common in dogs, so it is best to keep pets and children away from this plant

PennyGold · 23/04/2020 14:58

I'd ring your GP for advice as 111 can take hours, if they don't answer I'd take her to A&E.

N12345625 · 23/04/2020 14:59

Sorry, the title was written very quickly. She definitely didn't put any petals in her mouth or swallow them, but think she might have put the broken stem in her mouth. I have rang the doctor and am waiting for a call back :( thank you for all the replies

You are waiting for a telephone call - Really? Really?!
Take your child to A&E.
If you're more worried about your child contracting a virus at the hospital then ring A&E and tell them you're on your way.

SnakesandKnives · 23/04/2020 15:16

It is only usually dangerous if eaten in decent quantities as can do damage to the liver. Very very rarely a problem in people (unsurprisingly it’s usually dogs)
Has she reacted to it at all? If she hasn’t already got skin irritation from where she touched it then I’m sure she will be fine given you said she didn’t eat lots. If she has reacted to it (skin wise) it will be red, itchy and irritable for a bit but shouldn’t actually be harmful.
Hope this helps

LochJessMonster · 23/04/2020 15:43

Jeez she didn’t even eat any! She’s gonna be fine.
There are very very very few poisons on Earth that will kill someone from exposure as small as that, and most are man made chemical weapons, not garden plants Hmm

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 23/04/2020 18:22

How is she OP? Baby DD ate a few buttercups once. I didn’t realise at the time but they’re toxic and part of the deadly nightshade family. She was fine.

N12345625 · 23/04/2020 18:59

@SeasonallySnowyPeasant thank you for asking. I spoke to the doctor who asked about how she is.. She doesn't have a rash, has been feeding really well and has been laughing so much all afternoon. The doctor said its highly unlikely that she has been poisoned if showing no symptoms but said to go to A&E if anything changes. She is currently in my arms being rocked to sleep.
I am going to get rid of the plant from my garden tomorrow! So worrying when things like that happen, I still feel so guilty that I was so close to her when she could have put the stem in her mouth.
Thank you to everyone for replying so fast. Xxxx

That’s good to hear, I’m glad she’s ok. More lockdown gardening!

Michelleoftheresistance · 23/04/2020 21:27

Very good to hear she's ok. Flowers

Aquamarine1029 · 23/04/2020 21:29

Glad she's ok. I would be tearing out that plant asap.
