Do any veg seeds not like seed trays

I never know how thickly to put seeds in and the only thing I think I’ve understood is root veg and beans seem more delicate about being transferred? I planted some beetroot into egg boxes instead to put straight in the soil.

Does anyone know Can I plant quinoa quite thickly in a tray and then separate them as they get bigger?

The more closely roots are entangled, the more likely you are to cause damage when separating seedlings, so if you're planting in a tray, plant as thinly as possible. I have heard the suggestion of mixing the seed with sand to make it easier to spread thinly (because you'll be planting 90% sand and 10% seed), never tried in in practice.

Anything where the seed is big enough to handle singly I would plant an inch apart. Where seed is too fine, I would still plant in separate compartments - as you say, egg boxes are good). The only things I would plant scattered in a seed tray are things which are being grown for baby leaves.

But to answer your specific question - quinoa is in the amaranth family - I have grown amaranth, and it was fine being transplanted. I grew it in modules, half a dozen seeds per module, so I still had to separate, but not too much.

We put beans, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes and courgette seeds in individual pots. They like to get a decent root sustenances going before transplanting.

In response to your original question no, beans are pretty resilient to being moved. They are among the easiest. Finer seeds can get tangled and be trickier. I've used egg boxes this year which have been ok. I prefer kids yoghurt pots with holes in the bottom as they don't dry out too fast.

I didn’t think of kids yoghurt pots ! Brilliant idea and am already very into ‘upcycling’ since the pandemic.
Thanks for such useful replies everyone .
