Did you ever see a cheanomeles (Japanese flowering quince) flourishing in an exposed site?

I have bought 2 chaenomeles, planted one in a sheltered place and one against an east-facing fence in an extremely exposed position. To be honest didn't realize just how windy it is there :(
The sheltered one is coming along nicely, but the exposed one is not thriving to the same extent.
The problem could be a bit of drought because it hasn't really rained for ages and I've not been very good about watering.
Just wondering if anyone has known a chaenomeles to thrive in the teeth of the wind...

I have one which is in a semi exposed bit of the garden. We're surrounded by trees so it's never that bad, but the wind does blow round that corner. It hasn't grown that much in the five years we've been here. There are others I walk past in the village in more sheltered positions that do better.

Mmm yes. I covet several beautiful specimens in my neighborhood and I think they are all more sheltered dammit.

We have a lovely one growing behind our bin store. It has crept under the fence from next door, so I suspect they really need the shelter.
