Hard to tell by the photo. Is it a coriander?

GreyGardens88 · 18/04/2020 16:06

No idea but I love the second "action shot" pic Grin

andhessixfeetten · 18/04/2020 16:48

oops sorry!
will try again later

Looks like leaf celery.

Khione · 18/04/2020 16:56

'curry leaf plant' ??

'which is different from 'curry plant', which tends to be silvery

lekkerkroketje · 18/04/2020 17:01

Looks like something related to fennel or parsley. Does it have a slightly aniseed/liquorice smell?

steppemum · 18/04/2020 17:06

not fennel, that is very feathery.
looks like celery family?

andhessixfeetten · 18/04/2020 17:06

well aniseed can be a curry ingredient so in that sense yes. hold on I'll just go take another pic, hopefully no more action shots!

As it came out of the ground it looked a bit like rhubarb with a red stalk.

Whatever it is it's hardy and perennial and can live up north.

Could be lovage?

andhessixfeetten · 18/04/2020 17:13

update: the neighbour who told me it's edible was told that by another elderly neighbour in her 80s who was a fantstic gardener in her time (never bought anything) but calls plants by local Scottish name (we are not in Scotland) rather than official names.... she's also got dementia (though it hasn't affected her gardening knowledge yet and she always knows when it's going to snow)

update: my neighbour also thinks it is marjoram but it doesn't look anything like the small normal-herb-marjoram I've got.

It dies back in winter but grows 2 ft in summer

google agrees with the lovage suggestion. Suggests it smells like celery, parsley, aniseed and curry (not sure haow it can smell of all of those, but still)

AthelstaneTheUnready · 18/04/2020 18:02

If the stem is hollow, it will be lovage.

Owlish · 18/04/2020 19:11

Definitely not marjoram!

If it's only 2 feet tall, it might be scot's lovage, rather than lovage itself. I had a plant once that easily got to 10 feet when flowering! Shock Actually, come to think of it, a friend used to say it smelled of curry, although I thought it was more of a yeasty celery scent.

andhessixfeetten · 18/04/2020 21:54

It must be Lovage!

Thanks guys! Seems like a pretty exciting herb....

It is lovage. It is quite strong in flavour like a strong celery/parsley taste. The plants are umbelliferous and attractive.
It adds good flavour to a curry.

Mine grows to about 5 ft I think and dies down in the autumn.

andhessixfeetten · 19/04/2020 13:03

Great. I will cut back the ground ivy around it so it can grow in all its glory.
