Damp, shady spot- what can I plant?

Just that really. We have a north facing garden so it takes a while to warm up (when spring has already hit the front of the house). I’ve got a really damp and shady spot that would look so much better with some nice plants but unfortunately I’m a rubbish gardener. The spot does get some sun but only for a few hours each day in the summer. I’d be grateful if anyone had ideas for what I could plant.

Brunneras do well in shady spots, they come in a range of variegated leaf forms, some silvery, or edged in cream and there is a gold leaf form too. They produce sprays of forget-me-not blue flowers at this time of year, and are reasonably easy.

VenusClapTrap, that’s v encouraging- I never thought of trying it on aphids! I’ll give it a go this summer.
NanTheWiser, I agree, Brunneras are lovely for shady spots. I have the Jack Frost variety in a dark north border, and it does fine.

I've just ordered a mahonia soft caress for my shady corner. I'm told it should do well but I can't vouch for it yet. My dicentra, huechera and liriope are thriving there so I second those suggestion.

Love the garlic water tip. I've just planted nine hostas and am very nervous about losing them all, so I will definitely give it a try.

Don't plant Woodruff! there's a related plant, Asperula orientalis, blue woodruff, which has blue flowers rather than white. I doubt that is quite as enthusiastic as the white one, which is a UK native.
