Any hope for this shrub DH pruned/ butchered?

Absolutely gutted that DH who never takes any interest in gardening decided to hack back to the wood a beautiful genista porlock in our front garden. It was mid bloom and would have kept going for a good couple of months. I had it in mind to trim after flowering but he's hacked the thing right back to bare wood and weirdly left a yellow flowering tuft on the top. I planted it years and years ago as a tiny little pot plant. So upset to see it like this. All the neighbours have always commented positively on it. It's in our front garden by the house and doesn't grow onto anyone else's land or spill over onto the path. He just randomly went for this bush not any of the ugly shrubs that could have done with a good cut back or even removal. My understanding is if you prune this shrub like this, it's done for. Anyone any experience of it coming back? Anyone else get why I'm upset?

I'd be extremely upset too. What a prick!!
As for the shrub itself, I think you just have to wait and see. Sometimes they can surprise you. I'd be treating myself guilt free to some lovely new plants as soon as garden centres reopen if I was you!

Thanks Tankgirl! He completely doesn't get it. Kept telling me he thought he was doing a good thing. I'd already spotted him decimating a lavender bush and asked him to stop, so not sure why he thought it was okay to move onto the genista.
I'm wondering if any garden centres or nurseries are delivering at the moment. Guessing they must be desperate to get rid of stuff.

OMFG, I'd LTB if my DH did something like this! Shock Mind, my DH couldn't tell the difference between green alkanet and perennial sorrel leaves last week. He volunteered to weed out the alkanet, but I had to show him very specific clumps of plants to dig out/leave. Like some people are colour-blind, my DH is plant-blind Grin

This is the sort of thing that my DH would do. He grew up in a city terrace with only a yard but for some reason seems to think that he is a whizz with the powered garden shears. Nothing is safe when he’s in the mood to use his tool! Wink

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/04/2020 15:04

I just wish people who are clueless/don’t read about gardening would leave stuff alone and just ask their other halves what needs doing. Why can’t they do that? They seems to just wake up one day in the mood to hack something half to death.

Moved in, stunning hydrangea in the back, 5 years since DH "pruned" it not sure if it will ever recover Sad

ilovesushi · 11/04/2020 15:37

Good to hear other people get my upset! Although sad to think about all those loved plants being devastated too!
DH is completely bemused. His comment that there are bigger things to worry about at the moment almost tipped me over the edge.

Oh dear, I'd be furious. Neither genista or lavender take kindly to heavy pruning and rarely grow back from bare/old wood.

ilovesushi · 11/04/2020 17:16

Thank youGlub! Mine's a genista polock but TBH I'm not sure how different they are.

Porlock not polock!

The HTA have launched a new section of their website to link local growers who will deliver with customers.

Doesn't look as if yours is likely to recover as they don't like being pruned hard. Mind you , our elderly clemetis had an accidental hair cut in October ( should have been February, why don't you listen to me.......) and it is shooting very well at the moment. Someone is looking smug. Hope it doesn't get frosted.

I totally get you. It’s the little things at the moment that are giving me a bit of a lift in all the madness. Like looking out at my garden and seeing new things sprouting. Things that cost very little and are just RIGHT THERE when we are staying at home. I’m so glad I have a garden at the moment, even though it’s full of weeds and I have nowhere to put all the green waste I’ve created!

You have strong grounds for divorce.
Clueless non-gardeners should be given labouring jobs only and never allowed to touch a leaf, flower or twig without permission, never mind hack at it.

I would have gone ballistic, OP. He needs to apologise and stop making 'more important things to worry about' crap excuses. Good job he doesn't live here!!!

No idea about the shrub except it doesn't sound good.

I’ve got one of these. Obsessed with nothing growing more than two feet high.

ilovesushi · 11/04/2020 20:31

Thank you lovely mumsnet gardeners!

My DH did this to a ceanothus soon after we moved into this house/garden. I'd always wanted one too and then we had one and then he butchered it 😟 I must get a new one sometime, though the other plants have mostly filled the gap now.
