Acer in deep shade

Does anyone out there think this little Acer Palmatum will grow much? It's in a north facing garden against a fence that's in deep shade. I wanted to be able to see it from the lounge. It doesn't get any sun and i thought it might get some as the summer goes on but not so far. How long does Acer Palmatum take to grow?
Thanks everyone

Acers are mainly woodland edge trees, they don't like too much sun. They are quite slow growing.

At least Acer palmatum. Other Acers (like sycamore) go off like a rocket.

Yes too much sun can burn their leaves. Just make sure it is protected from cold winds.

@MereDintofPandiculation & @crazydiamond222... thanks so much for replying. That's what i thought (about sun causing leaf burn). It's a north-facing position but against a fence so should get some protection from winds.
Further along where the sun hits is a Californian lilac and that seems happy there so don't really want to move it.
It's a new garden and what it really needs is some height. The Acer prob won't get that tall but maybe a lilac would be ok..wonder if they need sun though! It might have to go in the middle of the lawn where it will get sun all day in the summer.

Eventually they will reach above the fence.
I am finding buddleia to be tough and fast growing but haven't tried them in the shade. Mahonia grows in the shade but slowly ime.

You might find that the lilac does not flower very well in full shade. You could always plant a climber over the fence to give some height. Some climbing roses flower in the shade or a climbing hydrangea.

The main thing with acers growing in warm sunshine is to make sure they are well-watered, and not in a windy spot.

It will do fine in the shade, although autumn colours are better if they do get some sun.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Another issue i could have is that i might have planted it too close to the fence!

You might find that the lilac does not flower very well in full shade Californian lilac is Ceonothus, isn't it, not Lilac (Syringa). Does it need full sun to flower, or just for warmth as it's slightly tender?

Another issue i could have is that i might have planted it too close to the fence! Yeah, we all make that mistake Grin Luckily, lopsided Acers look a lot better than lopsided versions of a lot of other things.

BooseysMom · 21/04/2020 19:07

@MereDintofPandiculation..yes the lilac is Ceonothus lemon & lime. It's flowering where it is. It gets about 3 hours sun a day. It is leaning away from the fence to get to the sun. Pic attached.

The acer is further down and so far hasn't had any sun. I think if i remember correctly as the summer goes on it and the sun gets higher it will get a bit of sun but it will have to reach for it!

I'm glad that lopsided Acers look ok! Grin We'll have to wait a long time for it to grow to any size though
