Don’t remember it being so lovely last year, it also has a nice scent. Would love to know what it is! Sorry that I’m clueless

Broom?

MrsCastiel · 09/04/2020 11:48

The smell of my childhood! Our estate was full of them. No idea what they're called though!

CatChant · 09/04/2020 11:51

Looks like an acacia to me. If you post a close-up of the leaves I could be more definite.

We have a couple of acacias and they are spectacular at the moment.

Sharkyfan · 09/04/2020 12:10

I don’t think it broom as we have some of that too (or what I thought it was) and that’s harder and more spiky. This is softer. Will go get a pic of leaves in a mo

It's Mahonia Japonica I think.

TankGirl97 · 09/04/2020 12:52

I'm pretty sure from the flowers it's acacia, also known as mimosa.

Beebumble2 · 09/04/2020 13:08

I’m afraid it’s got the wrong leaves for a mimosa, it’s a variety of small leaved Mahonia.

Manzana · 09/04/2020 13:15

may be Acacia cultriformis or knife-leaf wattle

Petiolaris · 09/04/2020 13:29

Acacia pravissima. The triangular leaves are a dead giveaway.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/04/2020 14:05

I love Acacias and have never seen that variety before, on my wishlist now ! Where in the country are you OP , I am wondering if it will work in my garden.

Sharkyfan · 09/04/2020 14:11

I’m in south east - West Sussex/hampshire/surrey border
It’s in quite a shady spot

So I’m confused - acacia or mahonia?

Sharkyfan · 09/04/2020 14:14

Ah yes acacia pravissima picture looks exactly right. Thank you everyone!
Wonder if it’s just been a particularly good year for it or I wasn’t as observant the last 5 years we’ve lived here! Grin

Yes, the leaves are identical to my acacias, which are acacia pravissima.

It's a lovely small tree. There was a mature one in the garden when we moved in some years ago and we were heartbroken when it was ripped out of the ground in a big storm.

We replaced it with the most well-grown specimen we could find online and then discovered the original had left several seedlings dotted around the garden. They've all transplanted to other spots beautifully.

The seedlings are now shrub size and the replacement we bought is small tree size and looking glorious.

Beebumble2 · 09/04/2020 16:42

Goes off to research acacias. Every days a school day 🤭

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/04/2020 10:32

Acacia. Flower shape wrong for Mahonia and I'm not aware of any mahonia with leaves that small.

BaleOfHay · 22/02/2024 12:18

I know this is an old thread - but does anyone have any idea of how hardy this is? I'm in a frost pocket in the Midlands.

Tumbleweed101 · 22/02/2024 22:41

Water sparingly in winter… wouldn’t do well this year in my garden lol.

They look very pretty.

BaleOfHay · 23/02/2024 07:08

Damn. Typical. So pretty, but not for me.
