planted courgettes indoors too early ... help!

Novice gardener here. I planted courgette seeds back in Feb, after following pack instructions. Anyway, they are now huge growing all over the place! All 9 of them. Shock I've repotted but am wondering if it would be okay to prune them back a bit? Their branches hang kind of unhappily looking over the pots so I thought if I trimmed them back we might make make it to June when I can move them outside...

Depending on where you live, the plating out date is usually based on the last frost date. For the UK the last frost date is anywhere from the last week of April (coastal South West) to the 1st week of June (some parts of Scotland). So seed producers err on the side of caution and say "from June" to cover all of the UK.

9 plants is a lot, so I would plant some out before the frost date - u have backup if we have a late frost.

My pumpkins are going crazy too

Have just started my tomatoes indoors

Plan to plant out end of April if no sign of frost (South east)

I've put my courgettes outside today... But have 5 back up plants just in case

Where are you? I’d risk it, but dig in some manure which is quite warm into the soil and cover with fleece if it looks like a frosty night.

Plant them out and protect when a frost is due

OstrichRunning · 06/04/2020 13:49

Great, I'll plant out three or four so in the coming days so, if I can get hold of some fleece that is. I'm in Ireland, we are known to get frost into May here but the forecast seems good for the next week or so anyway.

Thanks everyone!

You could even get a polytunnel or something to cover them

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/04/2020 09:40

Yes, better to plant a few out than to try cutting them all back. Perhaps you could put some canes in the others and try and train them upwards.

9 plants Shock
2 are usually plenty for a family with lots to give away...

I would plant a couple out now. protect them with a sheet at night should it get below 5degree.

woodencoffeetable · 07/04/2020 09:48

I will tell you already now that you can substitute courgette for carrot in most recipes, you will thank me later

OstrichRunning · 08/04/2020 19:43

sorry, back with another question. I've planted them all out. Can I use a couple of thin fleece blankets as a diy option, as I won't be getting to a gardening centre anytime soonSmile

that would work, but I would remove it during daylight.
