I've recently moved an have a lovely well stocked cottage garden thanks to old owners. I got out and did some weeding today but there is a tonne of these. They seem well established but are sorted about all over the place as if they have self seeded.

I'm not sure what they are. Any ideas?

Looks like celandine which is a perennial herb.

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/04/2020 18:39

I think you right. Just googled. Looks like it is an invasive weed so I will try and dig it out this week. Thanks.

Don't celendines have bright yellow flowers this time of year or an I thinking of a different celendine?

And when you say herb does that mean you can eat it?

sorryiasked · 05/04/2020 18:56

Not celandines - they wouldn't have last years woody stems. They're also slightly shiny. Dont look right for buttercups either.
Maybe delphinium?

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/04/2020 19:04

There are lesser celandine and greater celandine These ones don't have shiny leaves but I'll google delphiniums too.

Not a delphinium. Don't know what it is but it's not a delphinium.

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/04/2020 19:07

I dont think delphiniums as the leaves on those are much more feathered. Gutted as I love delphiniums. 😫

Californian poppy? Bright yellow flower. Self seeds everywhere.

Not s celandine, wring shaped leaves.

eddiemairswife · 05/04/2020 19:10

Why don't you leave some of it until it flowers? It might be lovely.

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/04/2020 19:11

No the poppy is much more feathery. Looks more like the great celandine .

At least that's what my mum calls them. Googled and is this it plantlife.love-wildflowers.org.uk/wildflower_garden/grow_in_the_garden/welsh_poppy

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/04/2020 19:13

They are very pretty. I wish it was them but I don't think so. I think I will wait but if it's celandine I'll whip them out quick before they seed.

Had those in my garden. They appeared in late autumn and stayed green all winter. Started to go brown in the sun, so had to go. They had slight not-to-pleasant smell to them- a bit like celery.

mineofuselessinformation · 05/04/2020 19:43

My plant identity app says poppy.

MereDintofPandiculation · 06/04/2020 10:36

It could be either greater celandine or welsh poppy (Mecanopsis cambrica) - they're both in the poppy family and have very similar leaves. Greater celandine has startling orange sap, so you don't necessarily have to wait until they flower.

@footprintsintheslow "herb" in the botanical sense is a plant which doesn't have woody parts and dies down to the ground in winter. Some culinary herbs, eg bay, are definitely not botanical herbs.

You'd be very ill advised to speculatively eat anything in the poppy family.

Saw 2 different bushes today. Really love the red, especially in the smaller Bush.

Is it the same plant? And what is it called please?

Oblomov, it's Photonia. The variety is called Red Robin.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/04/2020 14:06

This is mine. I have birds nesting in it! Smile
