What should I do with the bathtub?

There's a bathtub, in the ground, in the middle of my garden. The people who lived here previously must have had a pond, and now I have a stinky bathtub filled with probably poisonous water.
I don't want to make a new pond as dd would probably fall in it, and it seems like a lot of maintenance. Getting it out of the ground is taking forever. I've no idea how to get the water out of it while leaving it in the ground.
Any wisdom? I have no idea what to do with the blooming thing.

I assume the smelly stuff needs to go somehow, no matter what I do with it. Soil organisms will break down the smelly stuff, as long as the soil isn't completely water logged.

If I empty it onto my grass am I going to make some sort of gross bog? No, the water will drain away.

So OP was there a plug in it? Grin
Any creatures lurking at the bottom? And what are you going to put in the massive hole?

Anon000 · 06/04/2020 18:12

The plug was in Grin one little frog hopped off before I could think what to do with him, hope he'll find a new home easily? The hole will be filled and used to plant a drawf cherry blossom tree!

How did you do it?

Anon000 · 07/04/2020 09:56

After exploring it further, it was mainly filled with soild and stone not just water. That was scooped out with a spade. Once that was done, dug quite a lot around the outside. Then it was light enough for us to pull up and flip.

You could start a compost heap with the 'slime' it's full of goodness (though I admit, it doesn't look as if it is Grin ) Then clean it out with a hose yes maybe make it into a sandpit. Or a wildlife bog garden, or a proper pond with stones etc. Put a solid wire cover right over it for the moment. Then a proper fence round it.

It shouldn't be a fad to keep somewhere for precious wildlife it's brilliant. It's called recycling , reusing etc. very modern.

I think you should make a nice bog garden.
Perfectly safe for your little one, can be made very attractive with flowering plants and keeps a home for froggy 🐸

Feel sorry for the frog tbh

If OP wants to help the frog, you could google micro ponds? It might be a fun project for being stuck at home, you don’t need loads of materials and is DC friendly as well as frog friendly?
