The soil is very dry and covered in the bobbly things that come off the tree.

It's in shade most of the day

Any ideas welcomed thanks

All I can think of is cyclamen right now. I think Google is your friend here.

bobbly things that come off the tree. That would be the cones Grin The fact you don't recognise them as such suggests that they're the not much more than pea sized cones of a cypress or similar tree. Probably not a lot will grow near the trunk - it's dense shade and will be very dry, A bit further out you could try Vinca.

Most of the usual woodland things won't work because they grown in the spring to make the most of the light before the leaves grow back on the trees - obviously doesn't work like that with an evergreen.

All I can think of is cyclamen right now. I think Google is your friend here. You'd need Cyclamen hederifolium and Cyclamen coum, not he cyclamen they sell for tubs and window boxes.

I have this problem too. I have tried to grow snowdrops but only one pitiful specimen sprang up. I bought some daffodils in pots from the garden centre and planted those out so it will be interesting to see what happens next spring.

I cleared an area last summer to let in more light. I grew runner beans to put more nitrogen back in the soil and they worked a treat, however, as I said, there was a lot more light.

Wild geranium also known as cranesbill, grows almost anywhere including on my sandy soil beneath conifers. Evergreen, spreads, about max 15cm tall with pink or white flowers.
