Starting gardening with kids

Hello,

I’m hopeless in the garden and keep everything as low maintenance as possible. DC is desperate to learn to garden. Always has been but work and other things have made it hard to find the time.
I think now would be a great time to start. Can anyone suggest some easy ways to get started, and what we would need (needs to be available for delivery)?
I was thinking of sunflowers, marigolds and some herbs to start with, but happy to be corrected if this is not a good start.

I was thinking of just growing things in pots/a planter for starters.

Needs to be fairly easy, I’m a key worker and won’t have much time but thought it would be a relaxing thing to do together when we can.

Thanks in advance

Sunflowers are pretty easy to grow and can be done in pots. Peas are quite simple too. If you get the dwarf ones they grow well in a planter and have the added bonus of being able to eat them. You can order strawberry plants online but ideally these grow better in the ground than a pot.

Cut and come again lettuces are good in pots and edible too. Likewise spring onions and cress. Peas are very easy, and look pretty when they flower too. Herbs wise, some are hardier than others. I've had success with chives, parsley and mint (although mint should go in a pit on it's own, or it will overwhelm the planter). Rosemary does well in pots, but avoid over watering it, it likes quite dry conditions.

You can also grow cherry tomatoes or strawberries in hanging baskets.

I'm TTC for baby #1 but when I eventually do have children, I really want to start gardening with them. It's such a cute family activity.

Thanks very much! Where do I start with things like compost? Anything to look out for or avoid?

Hi,
Sunflowers and marigolds are good to grow.
How about beans, they grow quickly and easily which is good for your dc to see.
You can also get those boxes of flowers from Home Bargains/B&M that you sprinkle into the soil and just water. You can get a specific theme such as pink garden/yellow garden. I bought my mum some once and she says they still come back every year.
I 'm not sure if those shops are still open.
I sent dh out a few weeks ago to buy a rose and he said the shelves had been stripped! I think everyone is doing gardening so you might have to see what you can get.
I've had success with Aldi plants, if you can access an Aldi.
Good luck op.
