What tree is this

My neighbours (empty house) has a tree in their front garden. My house originally had one but previous owners replaced it with heather Angry

Please can anyone tell me what this tree is as it exactly what I'd like. It blossoms in the spring/early summer

Could it be a magnolia?

cortex10 · 15/03/2020 09:39

Prunus? https://mvandenoever.nl/en/ornamental-cherries-utrecht/

Any fruit on it in the autumn? Looking at the bark all I can say is it’s not a cherry! Leaves would help identification too.

roonilwazlibismynickname · 15/03/2020 09:40

Japanese cherry? Or dwarf cherry?

DonPablo · 15/03/2020 09:41

Weeping cherry?

PanannyPanoo · 15/03/2020 09:43

Could be a weeping cherry or weeping pear.

Pigletthedog · 15/03/2020 09:46

It's definitely not a magnolia, it has small flowers I think.

I like it because it looks sturdy and quite symmetrical rather than a lot of weeping trees which look a bit flimsy.

I might wait til it starts to blossom and repost. Or I might sneak out, dig it up and put it in my garden.

I don't think it has any fruit.

Re it's shape, i am a complete ignoramus ,might it look like that because of the way it's been pruned?

Could it be a plum tree?

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/03/2020 11:05

It could be a weeping crab apple (Red Jade), going from bark, branch growth and general "jizz". It has crab apples, but only pea-sized and much loved by birds so easy to miss.

That tree's shape shape is natural for the variety if it's a weeping tree, but difficult to achieve by pruning - it would involve lots of hanging weights on small branches to counter their tendency to grow upwards. So I think your safe in assuming it's a weeping something.

Try posting later with close-up of a leaf and flower.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/03/2020 11:06

Agree with unremarkable that the bark does not look like cherry or flowering cherry.

Pigletthedog · 15/03/2020 13:43

I do appreciate everyone's replies, thank you. I've just legged it into their garden in the rain and taken a close up of its buds and bark.

It might be an almond (a member of the prunus family which includes cherries and plums and many of those have bark like that). It will be easier to tell once flowers and leaves appear.

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/03/2020 09:23

prunus family /pedant alert/ Prunus genus. Prunus (and Malus, apple, Pyrus, pear) is in the rose family Rosaceae.

Yes, seeing the bark up close, I withdraw my comment about it not being Prunus. I meant to have a close look at my weeping crab yesterday but forgot.

HildaTablet · 17/03/2020 09:33

OP, it looks very like a tree we used to have - it's called Cheal's Weeping Cherry, Prunus kiku-shidare-zakura. It's very compact and doesn't get much bigger than 3 metres in any direction. A nice little tree and yes, it has lovely, opulent blossom in spring.

some info here

Pigletthedog · 17/03/2020 23:07

Thanks for the link - is actually looked into ordering one of those but I was too indecisive!

So this is the neighbour's tree in all its glory - I found someone else in the street who also has one and they confirmed it's a Cheal's weeping cherry. I ordered one a couple of weeks ago and I'm hoping it arrives soon! Thank you to all who commented Smile
