Wanting to start working on the garden side bed, I went out to see some new plants coming up... I am unsure what they are. Could someone help me Id these in the pics please.. ? Are they weeds that I can pull out or any of those that I planted in the past years ??

I actually planted lots of stuff in there in the past 3 years... Peony roses lillies dahlias tomatoes Clematis... and did the biggest mistake of not labelling them all.
I had lillies/ dahlias/clematis/tomatoes but never seen any peony/roses come out. apparently they died (at least thats what I think).

Current Plan is to clean it up by pulling out all the weeds and lay some newspaper/cardboard mulch; topsoil with new bulbs/ bare root plants in.

TIA

The second picture could be a peony. They usually come up red stemmed and are coming up at the moment in my garden. I had one go MIA for a a few years before emerging again. They don't flower well without good sunshine.

I think the first one could be a clematis but did you plant one where it didn't have anything to scramble up? The others might have to wait a few days until the leaves are open.

thanks for the replies!

@WildCherryBlossom wow I'd be glad if its a peony. Wasnt looked after very well after I planted it..might be taking its time..

@ThatLibraryMiss Yes I planted a clematis (almost against a wall) 2 years before and it flowered beautifully the first year... had nothing from it in the 2nd year.. this is the 3rd year.. playing the Gardeners game of waiting!

Clematises like to have their feet in the shade and their heads in the sun, so if that is a clematis it'll be happier if you plant something low near it to shade its roots.

@ThatLibraryMiss lovely! thanks for this great tip!

The last one is definitely peonies, ours look like that right now

Bowerbird5 · 12/03/2020 14:20

The second one looks like it might be a Lenten Rose and the third one does look like a peony. I had one when I moved in here and it still flowers 31 years later.

Bowerbird5 · 12/03/2020 14:23

If it is a clematis you can also put a large stone over the roots to keep them cool.

On last week's Gardeners Question Time on R4 one of the panelists said not to put rocks around the base as they are a hiding place for slugs and other beasties.

GlamGiraffe · 13/03/2020 06:01

Last two look like peonies. Lovely.

Beekeeper1 · 13/03/2020 06:01

First one is a clematis and two& three are peonies
