Patio replacement?

We have a rather crap patio in the back garden - there's a slightly sloping concrete bit right by the house, then very uneven slabs before a step down to the lawn. The edging is broken and uneven. It's been on our list of things to get sorted since we bought the house, and I think we might be getting to it this year. Ideally I'd like to replace it with something that's level as a very basic starting point, possibly slightly raised up compared to where it is now so that the slope in the concrete can be evened out and we step from the house down onto something flat! There's actually another stretch of concrete about the same size beside it, (but round the corner of the house heading to the back gate), that will also need dug up and re-poured to get rid of the cracks in it!

Can anyone give me a ball park of how much it might cost? It's maybe 12 foot square for the patio and we're in London. When's a good time of year to get concrete in the garden dug up so as not to destroy my plants with dust? What's a good paving slab to use? Should I advertise when it's getting done in case anyone has a body they need to hide Wink? I have no real clue about this sort of thing, other than that I'm fed up of the crap one!

I'm getting quotes at the moment for a patio but not had them back yet and am anxiously awaiting!

We are in a "cheap" part of the country. I know concrete paving is the cheapest but beyond that not much help! We also have slabs already down but all loose and edging coming off. I've asked for a quote on blocks but suspect that will be pricey. I'm expecting a quote of 4K which is more than I want to spend anyway!

That helpful, thanks! I was anticipating more than £4k, tbh, due to size and labour costs, so in some ways that’s positive...

@PenCreed ok just realised my patio area is way bigger than what you've written!! Will update you when I have a quote!!

Ok been quoted just shy of 4K for 60 metres! Yours should be considerable less at that size!

Ooh, good to know, thanks! Although we're London so it may not be Wink

@PenCreed we had a similar sized patio (4m paving circle plus a small path) done about four years ago and the cost including labour was just under £2.5k. This included digging up and disposing of the existing (crappy concrete) patio that was already there. We are in a fairly wanky affluent part of Surrey so whilst not quite as expensive as London we're probably not far off!

For paving I can highly recommend Indian sandstone - we have the Raj sandstone which is lovely and resembles York stone for a fraction of the price. It has weathered really well. We got ours from this company - worth a look as they have a load of different colours and options.

Depends what you put down but I'd say definitely get porcelain. No algae, no black discolouration, washes with soap and water.

I am so glad we got ours.
