There is this tree in a garden backing into my mum's. It is very large and tall and has long broad leaves that stay on all year. It looks a bit like a mango tree from what I can see of it but obviously not as we are in the UK. Anyone know what it could be?

Can you pluck out one leaf and photograph that?

onalongsabbatical · 16/02/2020 20:38

It looks a bit like an avocado to me, but that's not very likely either. Can you get close ups of the leaves and bark?

pinkmagic1 · 16/02/2020 20:39

Unfortunately not. I have had to zoom in as it is quite some distance away.

Maybe some sort of ornamental fig?

PigeonofDoom · 16/02/2020 20:44

Looks like a loquat to me.

pinkmagic1 · 16/02/2020 21:23

Thanks all. I think PigeonofDoom has it!

Nice botanical sleuthing.

TiddleTaddleTat · 23/02/2020 20:34

Could be a medlar

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/02/2020 08:53

Could be a medlar Not if it's evergreen, which the OP said it was.

TiddleTaddleTat · 24/02/2020 09:17

Fair do's!

TiddleTaddleTat · 24/02/2020 09:22

To be fair , a loquat is also called a Japanese medlar (is the only medlar that is evergreen)

To be fair , a loquat is also called a Japanese medlar (is the only medlar that is evergreen) which is an example of why it's best not to rely too much on local names rather than scientific. Although they're both in the rose family, and both in the subfamily Amygdaloideae, loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is not a medlar (Mespilus germanica - there is only one species in Mespilus)

Looks like a laurel. That’s evergreen too and has similar leaves.

ChateauMyself · 01/03/2020 13:15

Could be a Magnolia - “Exmouth” is an evergreen. Grows huge.

Does it get flowers?

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/03/2020 09:16

Leaf shape wrong for laurel, a slightly different oval shape, and laurel leaves are thick and stiff - they wouldn't show the slight undulations that you can see on the leaves in the picture. Magnolia is a good possibility.
