What plant is this?

Hi,

So I’m not a plant person but I was given this plant to take home from work a couple of years ago and it was tiny. It hasn’t grown substantially but maybe it’s a slow grower!
However, I’ve managed to keep it alive but have no idea what it is - can anyone help?

What plant is this?

it's a jade/money house plant

Gatekeeper · 04/01/2020 09:52

Crassula ovata

It's a money tree, if you take off a leaf and pop it in soil a new plant emerges (eventually)

Thank you Smile

Some sort of succulent?

NanTheWiser · 04/01/2020 11:17

Yes, Crassula ovata, as Gatekeeper said. They are slow growing, and being a succulent, need all the light you can give it. A well drained potting mix is a must, too.
These plants will withstand plenty of neglect as you might see from the large specimens often seen in the windows of your takeaway shops! So, err on the side of dryness, and don't over water it.

What I really love about these plants is the dead leaves- they are a pale pinky purple and covered with glittery bits (presumably dead surface cells) - really pretty if you pick one up and look at it.

They do have little bunches of small white flowers, but not really worth waiting for.

Nan - is Crassula argentea an older synonym for C ovata? If not, what are the distinguishing characteristics of the two?

NanTheWiser · 04/01/2020 16:13

Yes, it seems to be an older name, MereDint. Along with C. portulacea, and C. obliqua. That said, there are a number of different forms, and varieties.
