Cactus leaning

Hi so I inherited a Cactus from my granny Smile day. I've had it over a year and it is now starting to lean over? My mum told me not to water in the winter and only a little during summer, so I've been following this advice.

I just want to know anyone's thoughts on this? Do you think the pot is too small? Pic attached,

Put it in a sunny spot and position the pot so the cactus has to try to lean towards the sun in the opposite direction.

Thanks for the reply, I did a google and it did suggest that. Do you think I need a bigger pot for it? I'll put in n my table in front of the window.

If you do replant it, get proper cactus soil from a garden centre. The replanting will give you a chance to straighten it up a little.

But IMO it's not desperately crying out for a new home. And repotting something so prickly is tricky!

That pot's fine for size. Possibly you might want to change the soil, but not till the summer. Looks like Echinocactus grusonii. They don't grow fast. I have a 70-year-old one, it's still only small beachball size.

70 years old! I don't know how old this one is? Thanks for your info. Smile

Many Mamillaria cacti do lean, its their growth habit. Stopping them doing so is futile.

NanTheWiser · 30/12/2019 21:30

But it isn't a Mammillaria, ListeningQuietly. It's an Echinocactus grusonii as MereDint accurately identified, and they don't normally lean.
@nearlyfinished1moreyear, I can't tell from your pic whether the pot it's in is just a pot cover, and the cactus is potted in a proper pot with drainage holes or not. It needs to have drainage holes in the pot and should never stand in water after being watered.

Nan
I saw the pic and if you think the ident is solid, so be it

NanTheWiser · 30/12/2019 22:24

Oh, it is, ListeningQuietly. I've been growing cacti for over 40 years, so I'm pretty good at idents! Grin

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2019 08:05

I've been growing cacti for over 60 years, increasingly peripherally in recent years (and never as seriously as NanTheWiser, so if we disagree, go with her). I haven't been keeping up with taxonomy changes or with new finds, but if it's something I grow, and which has been in cultivation for more than 50 years, I'm usually confident about the id.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2019 08:07

Is the cactus simply posing for a photo or is that where you usually keep it? Cacti need a lot of light, windowsill at the very least.

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 31/12/2019 10:09

The pot it is in had holes so it can drain. I have moved it to my window. I'll see how it goes from here

Cacti love being fed 2 or 3 times a year too.

ListeningQuietly · 31/12/2019 22:57

Nan
Did you go to Lullingstone ?

NanTheWiser · 01/01/2020 10:51

@ListeningQuietly, no I didn't, I'm afraid. It was a really hot day, and I wasn't keen to be in the big marquee with so many people in the heat! (I'm getting a bit too old for that!) it's a shame, because it was such a successful event, and there would have been many friends and acquaintances to meet there. Maybe next time...

ListeningQuietly · 01/01/2020 13:44

Nan
It was indeed a laugh and some CRACKING specimens.
Was very restrained and only bought tots Smile

NanTheWiser · 01/01/2020 13:59

Yes, I heard the quality of the exhibited plants was better than at the National! Hopefully, we'll have many new members signed up for the Society as a result.
With an already very large collection, I try not to be tempted into buying new plants, although I do still grow some from seed, but I occasionally buy rarer stuff on eBay.

This is the best thread on MN at the moment.

No Xmas present disappointments, no regrets over previous evening's drunken antics, no parking issues (with/without diagrams), no trans issues, no stealth boasts, no mention of bodily functions, no drip-fed far-fetched tales, no suggestions to 'LTB!' and (so far) noBiscuits.

In fact, I propose a nomination for classics.

NanTheWiser · 01/01/2020 22:12

Oooh, I'm not sure it's deserving of Classics @ParsleyPot, but I know what you mean!
And for that kind thought, I'll reward you with a pic of one of my favourite Echinopsis hybrids - "Sorceress".
