Does anyone know the name of this tree?

These trees are popular with local authorities, I've seen them in various carparks and along occasional roadsides. They look pretty ordinary for most of the year but in Autumn they become stunners as their leaves change colour, yellow, orange red, maroon. Are they a type of willow? They're not British, I cant find it on a tree app, experts of mumsnet, someone will know.

That is a gorgeous tree, they don't plant them near me. I'm going to guess an Acer but would love someone who knows to correct or confirm.

benadrylcucumberpatch · 18/10/2019 18:51

White willow possibly? What colour are the underside of the leaves?

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 20:03

Thanks sambeckett, not an Acer. Thought could be a White Willow, benadryl, but WW leaves yellow in Autumn. This tree is as lovely as a maple in its colour changes and goes through its full spectrum every year. And every year I notice them and wonder what they are. This particular one is about 20 miles away so I cant look at the leaves for a few days.

Roman? Though the leaves look a bit spiky. Does it have red berries?

5zeds · 18/10/2019 20:07

RoWan

FredaFrogspawn · 18/10/2019 20:08

Not to wan. I’d say acer too.

FredaFrogspawn · 18/10/2019 20:08

Rowan!

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 20:14

Thanks Freda, not Rowan; no noticeable flowers and no berries.

Looks more willow, than acer, zoom in.

Narrow leaf Ash?

Slightaggrandising · 18/10/2019 20:21

We have one near us and I often wonder what it is. I'm certain it's not an acer.

Slightaggrandising · 18/10/2019 20:22

@Wavingwhiledrowning it does look a bit ash like

longwayoff · 18/10/2019 21:07

@Waving thank you! At last, that's it, definitely. Thanks very much. Native to Southern Europe and Africa. I'm so happySmile. Thanks again to everyone.

@longwayoff they're amazing aren't they? All shimmery at the moment - my friends son said yesterday they looked 'fuzzy' and I knew exactly what he meant!

longwayoff · 19/10/2019 06:43

Yes, @NotMary, I'm thrilled to put a name to them after all these years of wondering. I've never met anyone who could name them. They are beauties.

I've just ordered one!! I love them

longwayoff · 19/10/2019 10:40

Hi @Slight, lovely. On further googling, the ones we see are likely to be variety Rayburn aka Claret Ash, possibly the one to ask for from supplier. Enjoy, may you have many years together.

Thanks for that, will look at getting one.

Bilngismything · 24/10/2019 19:08

I have no idea about the tree but recognised the photo as being in Alton!

longwayoff · 24/10/2019 20:29

Ha! Well spotted bling. Nice trees you have there. Like the Redwoods in Lady Place too.
