Bare root roses help!

Is now the time to buy bare root roses?

Has anyone seen any for sale at the more budget end - DIY chains etc? I'm mainly interested in climbers.

Thanks!

Yes, we're coming into the season for bare root stuff. I'd be surprised to see them in DIY chains etc, it tends to be specialist rose breeders who sell them. If you're looking for bargains, it can be worth trying at end of season (ie now for roses) in case the shop is trying to clear stuff out ready for Christmas or spring stock.

yes, season is starting now.
tbh I would look for growers, austin rises etc.
they know their stuff and you get what you order.

BandQ had roses a couple of weeks ago. Think they were £4. Not sure what type though.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 30/09/2019 12:41

Thanks all!

I definitely recall seeing them in B&Q years ago before I was a gardener. I wondered why they were selling dead twigs in plastic sheaths Grin

I no longer have a B&Q on my doorstep and it occurred to me that I hadn't seen any for sale in years in my other budget fave destinations.

I'll check out David Austen etc.

If planted this autumn are they likely to flower next year or am I looking at 2021?

I've only ever dealt with potted roses so I need to learn about bare root ones Smile

I ought bare root roses and they didn’t grow very well. I always buy potted ones now and go for good quality ones like David Austen. If you plant some now they should flower next year

Lioninthemeadow · 30/09/2019 12:55

We planted some bare root roses from David Austin last year and they all flowered this summer. You can order them anytime (I need to order another climber) but they won't deliver the bare root ones until November.

SilverChime · 30/09/2019 13:01

Bare root roses are cheaper. You get what you pay for, I’d buy a couple of good ones rather than loads of cheap ones. David Austin is good.

Thanks, these tips are brilliant!

I just got a thing from David Austin about bare root so yes

flamingjune123 · 30/09/2019 13:12

I bought around ten bare root roses two years ago. Half of these were David Austin and half from various plant mail order companies. The DA roses are by far better and I just wish I'd spent a bit more and bought the whole lot from them. I bought at this time of year

SilverChime · 30/09/2019 13:17

Code EDA will get you 15% off at David Austin until 15th Nov.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 30/09/2019 13:21

Ill go against the grain a little bit - two years ago I bought 2 x bare root roses from DA and two off eBay - the eBay ones are vastly superior (could be just a fluke but very disappointed in the DA ones for the price)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/09/2019 13:25

David Austin is very good if they don’t do well. We had a bare root which was really pathetic a year later, so they sent us a replacement.

FLOrenze · 30/09/2019 13:32

Ashbridge trees and Sarah Raven are both good suppliers. At the cheaper end Lidl and Aldi often have them.

Trethew · 30/09/2019 23:05

Bare-root roses are sold when they are dormant, not growing. Though they are available to order now, they should not be dug up and despatched until the weather gets colder.

Provided they are planted properly they should flower next summer and will be even better the next year
