Yup! I’m so jealous of anyone with lovely dahlias right now- they’d last 10 seconds in my slug zoo Sad

AiryFairyMum · 28/09/2019 18:25

Snails here. Is there anything we can do to get them to go away without harming pets and children?

MrsBertBibby · 28/09/2019 18:27

Nematodes! It's still warm enough. I found it makes a huge difference. Do it autumn and spring (maximum egg laying times) and you will improve things no end.

PigeonofDoom · 28/09/2019 18:29

I’ve just put the nematodes on my pots for the vine weevils- also gross! I think I have too many slugs for the slug nematodes though- I have a very damp garden

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 28/09/2019 19:21

My Dahlias were eaten within days of being planted, earlier in the summer

Everything else was untouched!

userxx · 01/10/2019 12:26

My hostas were destroyed this year by them. I cut any remaining leaves off just to be spiteful.

I order online here

It may be a bit late now frosts are forecast. You need a minimum soil temperature. All explained on the website. Just be ready in spring when they start waking up and have at them!

I would highly recommend checking under (and even in) pots and around the grass edges of your borders right now for eggs.

They will be little piles of white or clear-ish balls and removing them now will help to stop the population growing next year.

Also, it is most satisfying destroying them!

🤮 to illustrate my point, I tipped out a pot I had a rhubarb crown in that had some disturbed compost this morning and look what I found! Vigilance pays off!

userxx · 02/10/2019 12:07

I've just realised that slugs come from eggs!! Never thought about it before in 43 years!

I've got very few , actually none ( a few snails ) since we've made friends with a hedgehog family, it's fab because we used to have many,

They hate coffee grounds and or greasy type stuff, that you can put round the rim of your pots like vaseline,

NotMaryWhitehouse · 02/10/2019 19:14

@userxx yup!!! Gross, eh?! I take GREAT pleasure in rooting them out, especially when I find a big pile!

Slightlysurviving · 02/10/2019 21:44

Collected tonnes of slug eggs today. Fed them to my quails. Most satisfying Grin

Ohyesiam · 02/10/2019 21:50

Get out there with a torch and a pair of scissors just as it getting fats and commit slug crimes! Leave them in a pile, and the next night you’ll find the pile covered In new slugs feasting on their friends remains. After a few days most of your work is done.

MrsBertBibby · 03/10/2019 10:23

I water into the beds. The todes live in the soil and attack any slugs they find. I don't think you can water into grass.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/10/2019 10:33

@Slightlysurviving nice!! Also: awwwww, quails!

Slightlysurviving · 03/10/2019 11:04

@NotMaryWhitehouse they are cute and such yummy eggs. We had a broody hen hatch out 2 chicks this year. It's not very common, they are so tiny.

Wildwood6 · 03/10/2019 11:18

Another vote for the nematodes! Its the only thing I've found that ever works- amazing stuff!

DogAndCatPerson · 03/10/2019 11:20

My garden nemesis is bloody wood lice. Disgusting little bastards

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/10/2019 12:14

@Slightlysurviving wwaaaaaah! 😭 that is adorable!! How lovely.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/10/2019 12:15

Mine too @DogAndCatPerson and bloody earwigs in my dahlias all the bloody time 🙄
