Hi, our lawn is the bane of my dh’s life, it seems no matter what he does he can’t get a lovely grassy lawn.
We are absolutely not gardeners so have no idea about plants & weeds.
To start with we had a moss spreading everywhere so he used the evergreen feed/weed type thing. Lawn went black as expected but after a while the grass was lovely but very patch from the mossy areas,
He has tried scarifying it in the past, we have an electric rake type mower thing.
Every year we dream of chilling in the garden without it being patchy but it’s never happened as every time we try to treat the moss/weeds we are left with barely there grass.
At the minute there are a few small patches of lovely thick grass but the rest is covered in a type of weed I think.
I will try to attach pics, any help gratefully received.

Chemicals won’t fix this: moss likes a bit of damp shade and a compacted soil, grass likes it sunny and a better quality soil. You need to change the soil conditions a bit - aerate the grass (google for how to) and probably add a topdressing to improve drainage. You might need to reseed with a grass blend that’s more suitable for your conditions. Or find a local gardener who will do the aerating and topdressing for you.

Oh goodness that sounds a nightmare but if I need to then I guess it’s got to happen.
We are in the north east so not too much sun although the garden gets it all afternoon on the rare times we do get sun.

I’ve just googled and our rake thing does do that too so we have an electric one of those.
We lay about 4-8 boxes of grass seed every year too.

We use Greenthumb, they're great.

Unfortunately it’s likely to be light levels as well. Is your garden in shade? Lawns are challenging!

Parts of it are in the shade but the weed type thing is all over.

DH uses lawn sand for moss. Uses a spreader and a couple of weeks later rakes the lawn. He says it is better to do now than in spring when the grass is starting to grow

Thanks
