It's growing in our back yard. About 7ft high now, thick woody stems like a young tree.

Looks like a sycamore, they get huge!

LIZS · 26/08/2019 15:14

Sycamore, they self seed

iklboo · 26/08/2019 15:16

Oh thank you. We were worried it was something nasty. Happy to have a lovely sycamore.

Sycamores are lovely...as long as they are at least 17 metres away from the house, of course. That's the safe distance recommended or they can cause damage to buildings.

My neighbours have self-seeding sycamores sprouting all along our shared unfenced boundary (they are lovely neighbours and we get on very well but they tend to go for the wildflower meadow look) and I keep uprooting the sprouts.

Sycamores are weeds - I would get rid of it if I were you.

A sycamore in a back yard? 7ft?

Dig the fucker out whilst you still can!

iklboo · 27/08/2019 17:20

Thanks everyone - we're speaking to someone about it this coming weekend. It's a fairly big back yard (would be a garden size if landlord hadn't flagged it over). Not keen if it's going to cause problems and structural issues.

You really don't want a sycamore in a back yard - or a garden tbh, there are so much nicer native trees if people do have the space for a big tree, and many good small ornamentals if you don't.

I took out quite a few sycamore saplings working at a nature reserve today. HaloGrin

We used to have a small willow in our old house planted when DS was born. It was lovely.

Sycamore, and I’d get rid of it.

PigeonofDoom · 30/08/2019 08:05

Sycamore trees are not native to the uk- they were introduced a few hundred years ago. Get rid, they can be a real pest!

MrsBertBibby · 30/08/2019 08:26

God yes. My "hedges" are full of sycamores, which have had their tops cut off. I hate them so much. If I won the lottery I would get every last one grubbed out. They look so rubbish!
