What climbed to quickly cover ugly shed?

We have a large ugly shed.
I’d like to grow something up it to cover it as much as possible and would like it to be self supporting and give good coverage quickly.

Is there anything that I could be planting this time of year?

Clematis, should be ok on its own but I’d give it something to climb up to start it off. So a bit of chicken wire or trellis. Look up the rhs website. It’s v easy to use. I think fasciae would be lovely but would need a trellis.

@aussiesaff Grin what can you grow up that?!

Please think carefully before planting Russian Vine. It is a total nightmare and will take over completely.

madcatladyforever · 20/08/2019 08:46

For Gods sake dont buy a russian vine, they cover really quickly and then go on to cover the entire neighbourhood and are murder to get rid of.
I have a clematis montana reubens (there are lots of lovely different types and colours) and it covered my fence in no time. It looks spectacular in spring and is easily pruned after flowering.

Woodlandwitch · 20/08/2019 09:13

@Mileysmiley a jasmine would be lovely with the scent

Clematis is quick and pretty. Honeysuckle smells gorgeous and is very tough - it survives our Scottish winters - and comes in various colours such as pink, white, yellow and cream.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/08/2019 13:39

Clematis montana will rapidly go beyond bounds. I have it in a large tree, a neighbour is trying to stop his from covering his chinmey pots. So you could try a montana one side, and another clematis the other (an alpina or a viticella for example) and remove the montana once the other one is achieving good coverage.

The trouble is, nothing will grow quickly to the size you want and then stop. If it grows quickly to cover the shed, it will carry on and cover a lot more. If it isn't going to cover more than the shed, it'll take longer to get there.

Woodlandwitch · 20/08/2019 13:45

Probably not a bad thing. It’s a massive ugly shed. Huge, and surrounded by masses of ugly fences and neighbours have left the ends of their hardens to be a wasteland so it might prettify it all up

If it’s that big, you could prob plant more than one climber? Say, put a clematis at one end, a honeysuckle at the other, and a climbing rose in the middle. It could turn the ugly shed into a flower-covered, sweet smelling, major attraction in your garden!

Fieldofgreycorn · 20/08/2019 18:56

Good old fashioned evergreen ivy (hedera) is possibly the quickest and cheapest. Good for wildlife as well.

yamadori · 22/08/2019 18:57

The only issue with ivy is that it won't just climb up the outside, it will make its way through the wooden slats and inside the shed as well. Speaking from experience...

Other climbers to consider might be hydrangea petiolaris or virginia creeper.

Don't plant russian vine, it is awful stuff and I honestly don't know why it hasn't been banned from sale by now. It isn't called 'mile a minute' for nothing.
