Until the high winds did for it over the weekend, we had a big, old forsythia in our back garden, in the border by the fence to next door. It was very top heavy, hence going over in the wind, and I didn't actually like it much - it was here long before we were - so I'm not mourning its loss! Apart from the work we're going to have to do to clear it.

But it's left quite a big gap, and it was useful for screening us from next door. She's very nice, so screening a bit is more politeness than necessity, but what could we plant in the space instead? The fence is about 4 ft high, so ideally something which will grow to be a bit taller than that, is fairly pretty and easy to maintain...

I’ve got a hedge of this. Indestructible, thrives on neglect and looks good.

Sounds ideal - I like the description too Smile

I will investigate further!

I would plant a couple of pyracantha. It is evergreen, easy to maintain and good for the birds

I love my lavatera, it flowers later than forsythia, needs quite a bit of sun, but it's good tempered , seems to grow anywhere and the flowers are lovely. the leaves are a nice sage green too. Maybe with the pyracantha?

An evergreen escallonia with the large red flowers, Macrantha Rubra would look lovely.
