Small weeping tree for a big pot

Has anyone got any recommendations? I can’t decide. Sheltered courtyard garden could be full sun or partial shade depending on where I put it.

I am looking []www.ornamental-trees.co.uk/weeping-trees-for-small-gardens-c194 here]], I quite like the purple crab apple but my only experience of crab apple trees is them growing wild on footpaths.

This purchase is driven by seeing the most beautiful raku style pot at my local garden centre. Blush.

But a tree would be nice Grin.

There are lots of lovely dwarf Acers that have a drooping habit, forming a sort of umbrella shape, which would be lovely in partial shade. Depending on variety, lovely leaf colours in spring and autumn.

I was going to suggest an acer but I see Nan got there before me!

The very first tree in OP’s link is an acer Grin

One of the red ones though. I like the green dissectum better (3rd down on the L) as you get a range of greens throughout the year & finally a fiery orange if autumn gets frosty

Oh sorry but I don’t want an acer! I want something that flowers.

We had a weeping cherry blossom tree in our last garden & after 10 years it was not quite 5ft. Beautiful shape & flowers.

Friend has a weeping cherry tree with pale pink flowers with a flush of deeper pink, in a pot, it’s fabulous.

Weeping cherries are lovely, for a few short weeks in spring, but honestly, they are dead boring the rest of the time!

My green acer does actually flower a bit - tiny little red flowers - but even without that it has gradually different coloured foliage all year & is always lovely to look at. Don’t dismiss them without some research! Some have coloured bark too. They are very rewarding Smile

I really don’t want an acer - I just don’t like the look of them much !

Poor acers SadGrin

(I love them!)

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/08/2019 22:24

Acers have flowers. Just not the type of flower you're thinking of.

Weeping crab would give both flowers and fruit. But they can get very large so might well outgrow a pot.

I think you can also get a weeping pussy willow.

LifeOfBox · 05/08/2019 06:24

I can tell Giant Grin, but I don't!

Not all of them apparently Mere, according to the tree link above this will be ok in a pot, and a few others, the pot I like is waist high with a good diameter.

Malus "Sun rival" - ultimate height 2.5 - 4m, time to ultimate height 10-20 years, so yes, sounds good for a pot. Certainly has lovely fruit so gives 2 seasons of interest.

Oh, a fruiting cherry! That would be much more colourful!
