So, is my Begonia going to die in the winter?

At the BBC gardeners world show this year I bought two gorgeous Begonia plants. They're small now but fully grown, the flowers will be dinner plate size which I love.

Anyway, i'm sure I asked the seller if they were hardy 'cos I don't tend to waste money on plants that don't come back year after year. But for some reason, i recently googled it and it seems that they're not hardy? Am I going to have to 1. dig it up before the frosts come or 2. accept that i'll never see it again?

No 2.

I keep mine in pots and put them in the shed for winter. You could insulate them Oct-March?

  1. What a waste
  2. Noooooo I love them!

But i'm not about to dig them up. I'm just not that dedicated a gardener, plus I am FAR more likely to kill them in pots than in the ground.

How do you insulate them in the ground?

They grow from underground tubers, which will not survive outside in winter. Around late September/October when the top growth dies down, you can carefully dig up the tubers, dry them off in a shed or garage, and store them somewhere frost free, (as in the above link)

Mine's on a windowsill indoors. Will it survive the winter do you think?

I've had begonias last several years on a windowsill.
