So who is eating home-grown tomatoes by now, and....

.... how long does it take for green tomatoes to turn red, assuming it was actually sunny?

I have lots of reasonably-sized fruit on all 5 of my plants (2 x Sungold, Marmande, Gardener's Delight and St Pierre) but no signs of redness or even yellowness.
Forecast is good for this week though!

How are everyone else's doing?

we have eaten our first home grown toms this week, grown from seeds my grandad had saved from last summer's fruit and planted 2 days before he died in feb so I'm really pleased they have done well

MarshaBrady · 01/08/2007 20:00

Oh no no redness here.
Looking very lovely and plump and green green green.

lulu25 · 01/08/2007 20:00

blight
all going to the tip on saturday

potatoes are safe (and massively productive)...so far

Kathyis6incheshigh · 01/08/2007 20:00

Awwww!
Are you going to save some seeds for next year?

Ours are rubbish, no tomatoes at all yet!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 01/08/2007 20:01

oh lulu - it's a pain isn't it, all that hard work wasted. Our pots all got it too. Bad year for blight due to extremes of temp in Spring (remember those scorching april days)with hot days cold nights and then of course the rain.

inamuckingfuddle · 01/08/2007 20:03

I'll try, not as green fingered as he was though!

raspberryberet · 01/08/2007 20:08

I am no-where near eating mine.

I usually grow Gardener's Delight in the greenhouse and Tumbler in hanging baskets, but this year dh brought home a stack of seedlings from a chap he works with to try and they have been awful. The plants are really weedy, and no fruits so far - nothing more than a handful of flowers between them.

I think it's safe to say I won't have a glut of tomatoes this year!

atalantis · 02/08/2007 10:39

Gardener's delight have blight; harlequin are fine. Btw, should I destroy the GD to stop the harlequin from getting blight, or does it not work like that? Hope this isn't too bad a hijack...

witchandchips · 02/08/2007 10:50

ds picked his first one last night. few more look ready today yum yum

LadyMacbeth · 02/08/2007 10:52

We are picking a couple of ripe ones a day, but nothing like as many as last year .

The Sungolds have only just started to ripen.

fishie · 02/08/2007 10:52

i dreamed abotu the poor things last night. small green fruits on me black krim and plum, even smaller greener on cherry toms. interestingly the ones which are doing best are self-seeded from compost in a window box. gah.

lulurose · 06/08/2007 22:26

We planted tomatoes (alicante) in pots and are just starting to ripen up in the sunshine (in London), my eldest dd runs out every morning to check the colour and reports back! She was most upset to find a big frog eating the almost ripe strawberries this morning!!

The ones in the greenhouse are just turning red. But only the gardeners delight. The ones outside I looking very sorry for themselves.

MrsCarrot · 06/08/2007 22:59

I ate some delicous ones from a friends greenhouse the other day but all mine are still very green though there are tons of them. I think they are gardeners delight, or maybe moneymaker.

BadKitten · 08/08/2007 12:25

We had one tomato - thats been it. blight got everything

still on the upside my sweet corn is looking great

PrincessGoodLife · 08/08/2007 12:28

Eating them. Making chutneys and sauces from them. Giving them away. Might not plant so many next year .

suey2 · 08/08/2007 12:44

have 3 gardeners delight. Have had 2 tomato salads this week. They live outside on our london roof terrace. Loads nearly there now, but typically of on hols at weekend

Kathyis6incheshigh · 10/08/2007 15:17

Have had my first! It was St Pierre - Sungold, Gardeners Delight and Marmande are showing now signs of ripening.

'no' signs

bubblesbabe · 10/08/2007 15:25

Nowhere near eating mine either - they have actually started growing tho! Got 5 so far - mind you they are still the size of grapes. Is it the weather or just me?

grouchyoscar · 10/08/2007 15:49

I planted some tomatoes with DS this spring. We have no greenhouse so they have been outside since early May

We have some flowers and DS was really excited to see the 'pea' growing

We now have half a dozen 'peas' developing on the plants. I know they'll be late but I hope they are a sucess
